Networking problems

Wanted to let everyone know that if they've been having loading the top image, it's because Comcast is going spastic tonight. There was a solid 10 minute outage, and now my net connection is intermittent. I've got Pingplotter checking my connection to my DNS, and it isn't really acting like it ortto. It's anybody's guess what the problem is or how long it will last.

Being unable to load the top rotation image shouldn't prevent the rest of the page from loading or being displayed, even in IE, because the size of the top div is hard coded.

UPDATE: I didn't look closely enough. The initial hard outage should have affected you all, but the current intermittency is at the far end. (Comcast has me using a DNS that I can only reach by going through ATT and Level3. You'd think our DNS would be local inside the local Comcast system, wouldn't you?

The Short List

On my review index page I have a very short list at the top of series I recommend that I think nearly anyone would like. That last limitation is a severe one; it's the reason that Noir and Banner of the Stars aren't part of that list. They're outstanding, but they're definitely not for everyone.

For a long time now the list was: Haibane Renmei, Kaleido Star, Card Captor Sakura, Someday's Dreamers, Angelic Layer. I just changed it, though.

Kaleido Star hasn't aged well for me. I wasn't as experienced with the form when I first watched it, and now looking back on it I can see just how manipulative it was. Partly that's because Kalos is a despicable bastard, deep down. I think one time J referred to his management style as "Throw them to the sharks and see if they make it to shore", and that's about right. And there's another character who really has to be considered a sociopath considering what he eventually does. Looking back on it now, I doubt I'll ever watch it again. I may not even bother picking up the second season. (My understanding is that two new characters are added, and both of them are warped too.)

Card Captor Sakura is an outstanding series, but it's also out of print now. Geneon's license expired, and all the closeouts are done, and there's really no point in short-listing a series that cannot be purchased.

So both of those have dropped off the list. In exchange I added Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars, which is one of the very best series I've seen, and I also added Petite Princess Yucie.

That latter is better than it might seem if you look at the character art. It's true that in many parts it's unrelentingly cute -- though not as bad as Sugar in that regard -- but the main characters are surprisingly complex and interesting, and the back story and series plotline are well conceived. By the time I got to the end of the series I cared about the main characters a lot, and as a result the ending affected me quite strongly.

So now the list is: Haibane Renmei, Shingu, Angelic Layer, Someday's Dreamers, Petite Princess Yucie.

UPDATE: Bob (of the Corner Store) writes:

We still have about 90 of the uncut Card Captor Sakura DVD bundles left in our warehouse. My goal earlier this year was buy enough of these to have these in stock for the remainder of 2007 so everyone who wanted to see it would still have an opportunity.

That's good to know. I do still recommend it strongly. But unless someone else relicenses it, this is the last chance to get it.

You gotta register

It looks like spammers have discovered me. So I'm afraid the time has come to require commenters to register. Sorry, but them's the breaks.

Registration enables you to have a blog here but doesn't require it. In that it's like places like LiveJournal.

Warming warning

The weather forecast here is that it's going to top 100 degrees tomorrow and Wednesday. Imagine my joy.

In as much as I don't have air conditioning, I'm probably going to turn my server here off during the heat of the day. That will mean that you won't be able to retrieve the top rotation picture for this blog, though everything else should work fine.

Pixy? Paging Pixy?

Why has my side bar suddenly moved down to the bottom of the page? It happened after I posted my most recent comment.

Also, Brickmuppet's page is screwed up. His local paths don't work for me, though I'm not sure why. When I try to leave a comment on his blog the href tries to point me to /page.base/xxxxx which doesn't connect to anything. For instance, his most recent post's "comment" tag has this for a URL for me:

http://page.base/browser_issues.

Which obviously doesn't hook to anything. Equally, his image tags are doing the same thing.

Join the Fun

Pixy has taken mee.nu live. You can join here.

By the way, I don't know exactly when, but I'm probably going to restrict comments to registered users some time soon.

Rerouting

I left pingplotter running all night. At 7 AM this morning, the route to mee.nu changed. Now it's going through Level 3, and it's 20 milliseconds faster. There also hasn't been a bounced ping since then.

UPDATE 20070612.2110: Damn it! They switched us back again, and now my performance has gone back in the toilet. 27 pings lost out of 100.

Help from the audience

[UPDATE Below: problem seems to be solved now, no more help needed.]

I'm having trouble with the server again today, and I need to find out if it's just my problem or more universal. So please help me out by doing the following: Open a DOS box, and type "ping -n 100 mee.nu" and when it's complete (which could take five minutes), copy the last four lines of the report into a comment here. It would look like this:

Ping statistics for 75.126.89.164:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 71, Lost = 29 (29% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 77ms, Maximum = 98ms, Average = 81ms

Depending on when I do it, I've been running anything from 5-30% lost pings, and I think the reason I'm having trouble is because of failed handshakes. The question is whether it's a Comcast problem or a mee.nu problem.

UPDATE 1455 PDT: According to my pingplot, someone changed something about 15 minutes ago and I went from about 95% lost packets to about 2% lost packets, and now I can get back in again. (For a while there, around noon, I was at a dead 100% lost packets.)

We won't be needing any more reports from anyone, and thanks for the help. Apparently they figured out what was wrong and fixed it.

UPDATE: Well, actually more like 20% lost on my most recent 100 pings, but that's still a hell of a lot better than it was. Check this out:

UPDATE: I just did 100 pings and got 100 responses. 0% loss; that's more like it!

Server pain

Pixy is in the process of moving everything over from development servers to production servers and has been having some problems with configuration, which is why things have occasionally been painfully slow. Let's all be patient and uncomplaining, OK?

Anyway, to do my little part for relieving the problem, I've reconfigured so that only 10 posts appear on the front page instead of the default 20.
