Mouretsu Pirates -- The Gruier arc

Now that the whole Golden Ghost Ship arc is complete, I watched the whole thing in one sitting and took notes, which are below the fold.

I think I was unfairly negative after I first watched ep 12. It's a lot better than I originally thought.

Kindle Fire -- Danger, Master Robinson

I'm sure that Amazon has already made a profit off me, even if the Fire was sold at below cost. Having a bookstore in my own home is rather... convenient, and I'm already piling up unread books. I tried to make a rule for myself that I wouldn't buy any book until I had finished reading all the ones I already had, but I didn't stick with it.

At this point I've bought 6 different Rex Stout murder mysteries. Also "The Gripping Hand" and "Dream Park" by Larry Niven et. al. And yesterday I bought "The Doomfarers of Coramonde" and "The Starfollowers of Coramonde", when I realized that they were available. I just started reading the first Coramonde book, and it's just as good as I remember it being. (When's the last time you read a convincing description of a battle between an APC and a dragon?)

So that's ten books in five weeks, and every reason to believe that I'll be buying more.

The Fire having a high quality color display, I'm beginning to think I ought to buy at least one art book in color, and I'm leaning towards finding a collection of paintings by Magritte, but that's only an idle thought. Another possibility is "Dinotopia", if it's available for the Kindle. (type type type rats. Not available for the Kindle. Oh well.)

Strike Witches movie

Considering it's been 6 whole days, info in English about what happened in it seems to be vanishingly scarce. I found this, though SPOILERS.

Someone there copied a whole lot of Japanese tweets about the film, and tried to translate them.

Some highlights:

I found a report that the movie has done 400 million yen in the box office so far, which is good but not stellar. It's better than K-On, but not as good as Evangelion.

UPDATE: Looks like it was more like 40 million yen, which is about half a million dollars.

Spring 2012 preview

THAT Sea Slugs (oops!) comes through for us.

UPDATE: Mouretsu Pirates is 2 cours, so it'll continue through the spring. The second season of Zombie is here. (The second season of Dog Days is no where to be seen. I wonder what  happened?)

Upotte is at least worth a one-ep watch. Anthropomorphized guns wearing absurdly short skirts?

Spring Season "Top Heavy" award goes to Medaka Box. (Ye gods. Maybe that should be the "Back Problems" award.)

The "Wasted resources" award goes to AKB0048. The singing group is doing the main voices, but the backup characters are pretty much an all-star cast: Yukari Tamura, Yui Horie, Mai Nakahara, Ayako Kawasumi, and a lot of other recognizable names are all playing in the background.

The "I donwanna but I havta" award goes to the Saki spinoff. I'll give it one ep, but I expect it to be a complete waste of time.

UPDATE: Medaka (the top heavy one) is voiced by Aki Toyosaki, which wasn't a name I recognized.

It should have been, though. She was Uiharu in Railgun, Melwin in AsoIku, and Keena in Daimaou. Very versatile. I wonder what her voice will be like in this series?

Meanwhile... "Medaka Box" is a rather unfortunate translation, in as much as it approaches double-entendre. (See "box" in the Urban Dictionary.)

And it appears to be official. The Japanese name is めだかボックス Medaka bokkusu.

New desk chair

I bought a desk chair for my computer area when I moved back up here six years ago. It's gotten a lot of use since then, and it needed replacing. The seat cushion had broken open, revealing foam rubber inside. It was never totally satisfactory in the first place. And the big problem was that when I moved around, it creaked and groaned, rather loudly.

I think it likelty that the noise was transmitted into the floor and probably drove my downstairs neighbor nuts, though I never heard any complaints.

I have wanted a new one for a long time, but my brother has been too busy to take me to the store. A few days ago I decided to see if it was possible to buy one and have it delivered -- and it turned out it was. Office Depot, where I bought the last one, has a big web site and they have products which are delivery-only.

So I bought this one. I put the order in last Saturday, and it was just delivered. It came in a box, "some assembly required", but they provided all the tools I needed (two allen wrenches) and assembly was actually fast and easy.

It's a lot better chair than the last one. Much more comfortable, and obviously a much better design. But the biggest surprise was where it was made. China, right? Nope, it was made in Taiwan.

Mystery Meat: Honto ni Atta! Reibai Sensei

Today's Mystery Meat is Honto ni Atta! Reibai Sensei.

It is obvious from watching it that it was made using Flash. It's 22 episodes long, with individual episodes being only 5 minutes including the OP and ED.

And the animation is, I'm sorry to say, piss poor. The story is bizarre. The audience-viewpoint character is an 8th grader, whose class is getting an entirely new teacher. When asked what her hobby is, she suddenly dips her head. Ghosts appear around her. And she gets taken over by some weird and dangerous spirit from the past. Seems that her "hobby" is summoning the dead.

She can also cause others to become possessed. One of the girls in the class is inflicted with the ghost of Nobunaga, which then gets replaced with Mitsuhide, who sets fire to the classroom. (Um, that's a reference to history donchaknow.)

/images/05053.jpg

Did I mention that the animation is crummy? Most of this is presented in slightly-animated slide show format. The only thing that's animated is mouths of those who speak. It reminds me of the original "Space Ghost", and that isn't praise.

I managed to get through one 5-minute episode and gave up. It's a shame that such an amazing group of seiyuu were wasted on something like this. Hasn't Kaoru Mizuharu got anything better to do?
