Luck and Logic -- ep 2

This episode was mainly exposition and harem building, and it isn't really worth talking about, so I'm not going to.

Season to taste
OreIda makes bags of Tater Tots, and I buy them. Half a bag makes a good dinner. You pour them onto a cookie sheet, put them into a preheated oven and bake for 19 minutes and then, according to the bag, "season to taste".
Which means put salt on them, but they can't say that. Potatoes without salt taste like library paste and everyone uses salt on them. Except certain bureaucrats in Washington who create dietary recommendations for the peasants, which recommendations I stopped paying attention to a long time ago. Because it became clear to me that it was food faddism, not science. And now everyone can tell, because in the last few years the official recommended diet has changed quite a lot.
Butter is back on the OK list. So are eggs. Studies have finally shown that cholesterol isn't a synonym for cyanide. And after decades of saying "Reduce dietary fat; eat carbs instead" because they thought all of us were too fat, now it's been revealed that it's carbs that do that, not fat.
But still it goes on. The NYC commission, who have nothing else important to work on since NYC is an ideal city with no problems, no crime, and no other issues, anyway the commission considered a city regulation forbidding anyone in the city from putting salt in their food before sale.
Among other problems, a bunch of bakers went to the commission to inform them that you cannot make bread without salt because the yeast won't rise. Details, details... (I don't think they passed that regulation, in the end. Anyway, all it would have done is force all those companies to move their factories and bakeries to Hoboken.)
My zoology prof in college talked to us about salt one time. This was about 1974, before things got crazy, but he mentioned that when our salt levels get low we really crave salt and our food won't taste right unless we put a lot more salt on than we usually would. (This is most common in hot weather when you've been sweating.) Different people have different desires for salt at different times, which is why restaurants put salt shakers on the tables. They tend to undersalt the food and rely on the customers to adjust "to taste".
But the food freaks think they know everything (despite proof from experience that they're idiots) and the latest fad is food with no salt in it, proudly blazed on the label. John Kovalic did a nice job on that with his comic "CTRL SALT DEL".
That happened to me one time. I wasn't paying attention to the labels and I bought a jar of peanut butter with no salt added. One taste and I knew my mistake. I ended up having to add a LOT of salt to it to get it to taste like anything. It took me three tries, adding more salt each time and then stirring the jar up, to get it to taste right.
It's one more aspect of the encroaching nanny state, and I say this: you will take my salt shaker away from me when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers.

Sounds more like a Mike Bloomberg initiative - all the more ironic since Bloomberg is known to use so much salt on his popcorn that it would burn the lips, and his chef always included a salt shaker with the popcorn.
Of course, New York State gave us the state senator who introduced a bill banning salt from dishes served in restaurants, despite saying in an interview that he liked salt on his food and wanted it on the dishes he ordered.

Many, many moons ago (when I was a young Army officer in the beginning of the 1980's), I got the additional duty of "dining facility officer".
That meant that I ran the battalion mess hall. Well, I was the Officer In Charge of the mess hall; my sergeant actually ran it. I still kept an eye on what was going on.
Since I was the OIC, I read up on all the Army Field Manuals on the feeding of troops. One of the more interesting items in the manuals was a discussion on the amount of fat required in a meal; it appears that a certain level of fat is required for the brain to believe that the body has consumed sufficient calories (i.e. to feel satiated).
Knowing
that and looking at a low-fat and high-carbohydrate diet leaves me rather unsurprised at the fat levels of the US population.

Eglwyswrw
Does there exist a small town in Wales whose name can be pronounced by outsiders? Sometimes I wonder.
The town of Eglwyswrw is in the news because it rains there a lot. Which ain't the worst thing to be known for; it's better than being the site of a toxic waste leak, for instance. I'm just wondering how the hell you pronounce the name of the place.
I think they're doing it on purpose to make English speakers took foolish when they try to say it.
UPDATE: I'm not even quite sure how to pronounce "Portmeirion".

Maybe "Eglwyswrw" is an ancient Druidic incantation to summon rain...

There are a lot of names in the UK that you can never know if you're pronouncing right. At least this one has the grace to be obvious.
(BTW, the dialog box in your "how to put links in your comment" doesn't work for me. I put the URL in the popup, but the "OK" button does nothing. I had to use BBCode.)

GATE -- Noriko
This is a huge spoiler so it's below the fold.

(Lelei is still my favorite character, but Kuribayashi is a close second.)

Eh, Kuribayashi seems a little too much 'Don't think - fight." for me. Even Rory is not as impulsive as our wannabe harridan.
Episode 14 did feel very disjointed, like the scriptwriters had a bunch of scenes they wanted to include, but could never put them together into a smoothly flowing narrative. I have not read enough to the translations of the light novels but it felt like liberties were taken.

Well, in this particular case she was following orders. But it can't be denied that she wanted those orders and enjoyed following them. (The manga makes that a lot more clear than the anime.)

Kuribayashi seems a little too much 'Don't think - fight." for me.
She was given orders to "fire at will." The fact that she restrained herself and used non-lethal (but painful) methods until the Centurions got involved shows that she
wasn't just acting impulsively in that scene.
All that being said, I do love watching someone who enjoys her work.

I am actually referring to all the previous incidents with Kuribayashi. She gets a pass on this one given Itami ordered her and Tomita to take care of business.

Although Kuribayashi does seem to enjoy fighting a bit too much, she only seems to want to fight for the "right reasons". I think she will have no trouble being accepted as a disciple of Rory...

Oh boy....After taking look, it appears that the anime is largely faithful to the original plotline of the light novels, in the sequencing of events and by content. Which means the inconsistency and issues were by the original author.

There's two things that bother me about Kuribayashi fighting hand-to-hand (All of the times she's been doing it throughout the series):
1) She's doing it as a part-timer against forces who don't do it any other way. The Empire forces will spend all of their time training on hand-to-hand and sword/spear based combat, while she will only do it between training on more modern weapons and tactics. Plus, a rifle with a fixed bayonet is basically a spear, but will be deeply compromised vs. the regular spears the Empire forces carry. After all, her rifle is designed to be a rifle, not the handle of a bladed weapon.
2) She's hitting way above her weight class--literally. There's a reason that fighting sports are divided up into male and female and by weight. I have no doubt that she could whip a high plurality of people's asses with the element of surprise. However, they have her whipping everybody's ass in all fights.
I get why they do it for story reasons, and compared to the whole plot it's an easy suspension of disbelief, but it's still there.
I just finished watching the latest episode, and I'm glad the timeline with Noriko is bothering everybody else. I was trying to figure out what I missed.

Jim Dunnigan has written about how men (and, presumably women) deal with combat, and in particular how there are occasional people who thrive on it. It seems like it's their natural element. He says that the Vikings called men like that "Berserkers" and put them on the front line. More recently they have become known as "super soldiers". (That's what Dunnigan calls them, anyway.)
Some of our more famous American soldiers were apparently like that. I think he pointed out two in particular: Patton and Ridgway. This characteristic doesn't necessarily make a man a good General but it also doesn't disqualify him. (It can be a problem sometimes because these kinds of men don't really understand what combat does to normal men, and Patton did have a problem with that.)
It's clear to me that the author is presenting Kuribayashi as being a super-soldier. The author spent a long time in the JSDF and though it never saw real combat there would still have been combat exercises and war games and if he kept his eyes open he would have noticed the type.
And, it turns out, that even though they aren't physically any different than anyone else, they can be far more effective simply because they don't seem to have any fear.
Yeah, the Pretorians are well trained and well armed, but when they're charged by a woman who's five feet tall and screaming bloody murder, they would definitely be intimidated and would feel fear, which would put them on the defensive. I don't find it implausible at all that she could have that effect on them, especially when combined with unusual weapons (they had never seen a rifle with a bayonet before) and uniform and equipment and with the reputation that the JSDF has by that point after two major battles at Alnus and one at Italica.

Your examples are of people who were not physically hitting their enemies. Patton and Ridgway distinguished themselves as generals, where most of their work was intellectual and leadership. Here, we have somebody who's 5' nothing and maybe 120 lbs beating the hell out of all of the people. That would be a little off if she was merely fighting contemporary forces; here, she's beating the hell out of people whose only methods of warfare are arrows and beating the hell out of people. And rifle or no, I think they'd figure out pretty quickly that she's wielding a spear that has a reach of about half their own.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying there's an issue with Kuribayashi being the best soldier in the show. History has shown that a woman with a gun is easily a match for a man with a gun (or without one). I question her being the best hand-to-hand combatant. I should note that her being female has very little to do with this; I'd find it as much of a suspension of disbelief thing if it was a male JSDF, as the Empire has every incentive to maximize their skill at close in, hand-to-hand combat, where the JSDF only does it if things spiral out of control.
I picked Fairy Tail back up after getting caught up on Gate, and it occurred to me that I never even thought twice about Erza being one of the heaviest hitters. However, that show starts with the premise that all of the fighting is fantastic (in the fantasy sense), so it fits with everything else. Gate spends a lot of time having accurate weapons, etc., so when they do something fantastic like having the best hand-to-had combatant be one of the smaller people, it stands out more.

Kurabayashi has a problem - she's death walking and yet it's Itami, slacker extraordinaire, who's got a ranger badge! ;p
I don't know that you could say that she's the best warrior in the show (even leaving out Rory). But shock, it's a real thing, y'know? Kuribayashi wouldn't win in a gladiatorial arena, but most of the fights we've seen have been situations where she wasn't expected (or where the other guys were already really unsettled by events), and she's racked up a tally that's flattering her skill somewhat. Guts and no hesitation really can do that in real life, though.

A "half-reach" spear can be an advantage in close-quarters individual combat (or small-unit combat); ask the Zulus. Long spears are for throwing, or for large-unit formations (the European "pike hedge").
(Handwaving to follow.) And she's in a fantasy world. Dragons shouldn't be able to fly with their wing-to-weight ratio (with the size of some fantasy dragons, they shouldn't be able to breathe). They can fly simply because they're dragons; they're supposed to be able to fly. Maybe Kuribayashi wins because she's a true warrior and she's supposed to win? (In D&D terms, she has some fighter/monk levels, and many of her opponents are zero-level shlubs, trained or not.)

I don't know about that but after Italica Kuribayashi seems to have Rory's favor, and that may have practical aspects to it since Rory is the apostle of Emroy, the god of war, crime, madness, and death. (Sounds like a fun guy to have at a party, doesn't he?)
So Emroy may also smile on Kuribayashi, and that might not be trivial.

Pina's father impressed me in this episode, more than in any other. He was analyzing the situation in passionless detail and calmly concluded where his entire empire fit in against these enemies. This was his first time seeing them live and in combat.
I'm sure when Kuribayashi switched to live ammunition once the (sort of) Phalanx was formed, and he saw the easy defeat of one of his better defensive formations, that clinched the deal.

Musaigen no Phantom World -- ep 2

I'm having distinctly mixed feelings about this show.

First the bad: I've never been a fan of comedic violence, and this has a lot of it. Haruhiko abuses Ruru, and Mai abuses Haruhiko. It's supposed to be funny but I don't think it is. (Chuck Jones can do it and make me laugh, but these guys aren't that good.)
And "the team of losers who keep screwing up" doesn't really work for me. Of course it's intended as a low point out of which they climb, but I wouldn't mind if they do the climbing sooner rather than later.
In particular, I wish Haruhiko wasn't such a turkey. For instance, in this episode he revealed a new ability: he can summon phantoms to work for him. Well, sort of. This was what he wanted:

This was what he got:

The good: I have to admit it's a pleasure to spend time with Mai. We're due for a swimsuit episode and I'm looking forward to that, too. (I have simple tastes.) And in general the art in this series is excellent, and not just of the girls.

And there's an interesting story concept here which is pretty deep and complicated. The series description says that we're due for a plot whiplash before it's all over, and from what I'm seeing it could be a doozy. Whatever it is, I'm sure it involves the loli with the teddy bear.
They're laying out a lot of mysteries without shining spotlights on them, which is a sign of mature story telling. (Too many directors will put in a plot point and then point at it and shout HEY LOOK AT THAT THING I JUST DID.)
The biggest mystery for me is Ruru, because I have the distinct impression that there is more to her than she's letting on, and it's probably sinister. After they defeated the robot in this episode, she flew over and found that small gizmo and brought it back to Haruhiko, and she didn't really have to search. She knew it was there and knew she wanted him to have it. What is it? (We're probably going to learn more about it next episode.)

Why is she hanging around him, anyway? She plays the clown, but is that all there is to her? She doesn't stay in his home at night; she flies away and goes somewhere else. Where? Why? But she's back every morning (according to the first episode) and goes through his morning routine (teeth brushing etc.) with him. So what's her deal?
And, of course, there's a huge mystery about The Event ten years previously. Just what were they doing in that factory? Was it really a terrorist bomb that released the virus, or something else? Was it really a virus that caused all this, or something else? And is this really about teleology? How can things that humans imagine actually cause physical damage, and hurt people, and move things around?
Are we in full-scale Bishop Berkeley mode here? A tree falling in the forest when there's no one around doesn't make a sound and in fact doesn't even exist unless a human is looking at it? The opening of the first episode suggest that may be the case.

Now a grand edifice like this could collapse in an ill-conceived heap but it could also end up being really intriguing and thought provoking. And in the mean time we can ogle Mai.
So I think I'll stick with it for a while yet.

Oh...Wow. I thought how Firaxis handled the reboot was bad. The board game sounds even worse.

I've played it, and it's really good. Up to four players, but I recommend at least 3. It's a strategic scale game, not tactical. You and your friends play co-op defending the Earth vs. the aliens, which are run by the app.
The reason for the app is to introduce RTS to a boardgame. It's constantly mixing up the order of events, so you don't know what's coming next. The events are timed, and once a new one starts, you have to stop responding to the prior one. (It pretty much is impossible to keep working on the prior action) So you can't sit around and debate strategy with your friends and make the perfect move-- you have to react, and do so quickly.
At lower levels though, you can pause the game freely, with no penalty. At higher levels, you can pause the game a bit... but it doesn't let you know how much--just that it reduces the amount of time at each level, and the more you pause at the start, the less time you've got at the end.
You don't have enough resources to do everything. Fortunately, you do have an idea of the aliens' grand strategy, but only generally. Do you buy ground troops or interceptors? Space defense, or research? Each player handles one aspect, and has to keep track of the budget. Bad things happen when someone overspends....

Your summary actually makes the game sound even worse to me. Nothing like following Firaxis' habit of giving you the appearance of choice to add to the disincentives.

I'm intrigued by the time limits. The biggest problem with co-op board games, IMHO, is that differing skill levels of players can lead to better-skilled players simply telling lesser-skilled players what to do. This happens in Pandemic all the time with my family.
An app giving private information, and strict time limits to Cousin Brandon doesn't have time to even explain all the options to Uncle Tim, means that Brandon has to make his own decisions without getting advise (by preference or otherwise) from Tim.
That said, I decided not to buy this game because the game will be useless someday when I don't own a device that can run the app.

Winter 2016 -- the final score
So from the shows I wanted to sample, here's how it came out:
WATCH:
Gate (Friday)
CONTINUE:
Musaigen no Phantom World (Wednesday)
Luck and Logic (Saturday)
DUMP:
Dagashi Kashi
Oshiete! Galko-chan
Fairy Tail Zero
Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desu Kara
Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm
I considered watching another episode of Dagashi Kashi but it isn't aging well. I just can't see it going anywhere.
Even so, one solid hit and two good possibilities isn't a bad result. Damned sight better than the season that just ended, I'll say that.

Gate, of course, is great and a must watch. I like
Dimension W so far, but it better have lightning fast pacing if it wants to keep viewers interested. It reminds me of
Gangsta in style, but that anime kind of fell apart at the end.
Fairy Tail Zero episode 1 stunk. Oh no, Mavis is a Cinderella-esque slave, but has a good attitude! Oh no, her entire adoptive guild is dead, but she made a friend out of the girl that was mean to her! Oh no, her new friend inexplicably died too!
Blechh. All cliches and no fun make
Fairy Tail Zero a dull show.
I didn't really like
Luck & Logic. The first episode didn't pull me in. I'll give it another shot, though.
Prince of Stride Alternative is
Free! with free-running (parkour) instead of freestyle swimming (swimming).
Bahamut is a baha-bust.
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar has worse pacing than
Overlord, which is really saying something.
Boku dake ga Inai Machi built up some interest and goodwill with the viewer in its first 20 minutes, and then completely started over in the last 2. I don't know what to think at this point.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a superb anime about a subject that absolutely no one cares about.
Schwarzmarken and
Divine Gate are your generic anime of the season. They just exist. They are neither good nor bad. They fill your TV with images, yet you feel nothing and remember nothing about them.
I'm committed to
Durrrrrrrrrr!!!! XYZ because I want to see how this ends, but my patience is wearing thin for this show to reach some sort of conclusion.
I'm still trying out a few more anime this season, but I've gotten hooked on 3D television again: Beowulf Return to the Shieldlands, The Magicians, iZombie, Grimm, etc. so I may tune out a few shows quicker than I usually do.

Finishing the list
So let's wrap up all the other shows I wanted to sample.

Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm -- aka "flying shoes". You'd think a show about people who can fly would be more interesting, wouldn't you? The big problem is the characterization. The main character is a girl named Asuka, and she's the uber-ditz. Thoroughly annoying and totally unsympathetic. We can't blame the seiyuu for this, either; she's very experienced (she was Yoshika in Strike Witches, for instance) and quite capable of doing strong, sympathetic, girl parts (Anzu in Girls und Panzer, Hime in Yozakura Quartet). And the art doesn't make up for it, and none of the other characters are interesting either. Fail.

Luck and Logic -- In the first minute I was ready to dump this as a heavily disguised mech show. And that's sort of what it is, kind of. But there are enough differences so as to not outright drive me away. It is, of course, a harem show. Our Hero is the only guy, and becomes part of a team with four girls and five "covenanters" all of whom are female. They didn't pack the episode with exposition, which was nice. There was actually quite a lot but they disguised it well -- "Show, don't Tell". There are rare teenagers called Logicalists who have the ability to form a covenant with a magical? being called a covenanter and exercise super powers. This power manifests at puberty and begins to fade at adulthood, so it's yet another "teenagers save the world" show, dusty as that is. But Our Hero isn't a klutz, though he also doesn't seem to be a Marty Stu. He was a logicalist earlier and was present at some sort of titanic battle two years ago in Hong Kong, where he did something called "Over Trance", and as a result of that battle he lost his power. However, today (in the show) he gets it back because a Covenanter named Athena has sought him out to be his partner. There's nothing radically innovative in the story, to say the least, but the pieces fit nicely and the animation was excellent. I'll give it another episode, at least.

Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara -- is a lolicon show in 4 minute episodes, with lots of closeups of the loli's panties. No thanks.

Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut -- is Infinite Stratos in magical drag. Our Hero is the only boy at a school for girls to become "Drag-knights", which means they fight using "Machine Dragons". It's all very familiar.
Fairy Tail Zero -- Unfortunately, it's taking the broadcast slot that was used by Fairy Tail, which is suspended for, I assume, 1 cour. The Fairy Tail anime has reached the end of chapter 416. Chapter 417 is filler. And there's a 1 year skip before chapter 418. Chapters 449-451 and a couple of others tell the back story of Mavis and Zeref, and it looks like they're telling that story, in a more extended form, in Fairy Tail Zero. Once it's done, we'll pick back up with chapter 418, presumably. But I'm not interested, so I probably won't watch it.

Who says we don't know how to have fun?
Dozens gather for Portland's annual 'No Pants Day'
MAX riders stripped down to their underwear Sunday for Portland's annual "No Pants Day."
Dozens showed up without their pants at the Skidmore Fountain MAX stop and rode for free on the MAX to Pioneer Courthouse Square.
And it wasn't just for show, but all for a good cause. The group is collecting winter gear to donate to homeless shelters.
Fox 12 went downtown to see how everyone was feeling about this year's event.
"I think that it's great," said a participant. "It's keeping Portland weird. You know, people can just be people and it's not obscene, nobody's out here being weird or causing any kind of crime or anything. I love it."
"I think it's a great reason to not wear pants," another participant told Fox 12. "There's always a good reason to not wear pants."
