And with this episode I'm now up-to-date.
Someone here left a comment to the effect that in ep 7 Railgun shows it can do "dark". Within the context of what I'm coming to realize really is a fluffy romcom, this episode was less fluffy than the others so far in this series. But by the standards of Index this wasn't dark at all.
So a disaffected geek starts setting off bombs with explosive power comparable to hand grenades. Not a good thing, to be sure, but not exactly a world-class crisis either.
Spoilers about Index:
In another point, he and some others are stuck trying to cope with an angel executing the "sweep" spell. That's the one which was used on the biblical city of Gomorrah.
He and his friends also fight against a building-sized golem.
Lessee; he also fights against what is best described as a fire elemental. And he's caught in the middle of a couple of attempts by certain folks to try to ignite a full-scale war between the forces of Science and the forces of Magic.
Oh, yeah, and there's also the little matter of 10,031 dead girls, used up in a cynical experiment to try to make one guy stronger. And 9,970 others who share a group mind.
By the standards of Railgun, this bomber is the biggest and most dangerous threat we've seen so far, for instance compared to the mad eyebrow girl. But by the standards of Index this would have been an amusing interlude.
It sure as hell ain't "dark".
Which is fine; in a romcom, "dark" would destroy the mood. The point of this episode was to make Mikoto confused about Touma, and that's OK. But it's in the service of comedy. The Tsundere is about to change state to deredere mode.
So saying it isn't dark isn't a criticism of Railgun. But let's keep a sense of proportion here.

Mustard yellow is darker than lemon yellow, but nobody's gonna confuse them with charcoal gray, after all.
And, you must admit, in comparison to the first five eps, six and seven were darker.
Mustard, Lemon.

Actually, I was thinking of this comment by Civilis:
I do know that the end of episode six of Railgun, and the whole climax of episode seven, are pretty much free of fluff; and while not quite as dark as Index, leave it obvious that Railgun can do serious when necessary.
I didn't think that ep 7 of Railgun was really very serious. But I'm comparing it to things like ep 20 of Index, which is really serious.

not sure how much the anime will cover though, as the opening only shows scene from the level upper arc.
