Index and railgun, relationship?

I'm not clear on the relationship between the two series To Aru Majutsu no Index and To Aru Kagaku no Railgun.

I know that in the original book series there's a side-story about Railgun, and the Railgun anime is based on it. What I'm not sure of is whether it's a prequel, a sequel, simultaneous, or an alternate reality.

Do the "sisters" show up in the Railgun anime? I think that's the crucial question I'm wondering about. Because if they don't, then the Mikoto character is entirely different. If that got left out, then I'd have to start over from scratch trying to understand her.

Eps 10-14 of Index lay out what seems to be the primary part of her back story, and it explains why she is prickly, and feisty, and aggressive, and cold. Without going into details, there's a lot on her mind.

I'm wondering if Railgun is analogous to Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, where they skimmed off all the happy funny stories and left all the tragedy, drama, and pain for the other two series to tell. The FMP franchise overall is not very nice. In the sense that there's a lot going on, and a lot of people suffer because of what's going on.

In Index I've seen the same thing. The city is bright and clean and well maintained, and the people are well dressed and well fed. Lots of people there smile a lot of the time. But it's clear that there's a lot of real ugliness underneath that clean exterior. Touma gets involved in quite a lot of it; that seems to be the story being told.

Mikoto's story arc is one of the ugliest reveals in the series, going beyond even Index's story arc and Aisa's story arc in that regard. Thinking about it makes me feel just a bit nauseous, in fact.

If they left all that stuff out of Railgun then it might well be unrecognizable. It's the essence of the Index story, it now becomes clear to me.

UPDATE: This is the most horrifying moment in the series for me so far, from ep 11:

What they're all wearing is night vision visors. What the one in the middle is carrying is a body bag, which contains the corpse of another of them who was killed minutes before.

It's horrifying for what it implies, not for what it shows. And what is revealed later is even worse than what this scene implied.

If that aspect of Mikoto's story is omitted in the Railgun anime then it's an entirely different character in an entirely different place, who just happens to look the same.

This is the substance of the Railgun character. If they excised it, then she has no substance. All she has is a super power and a lesbian stalker.

UPDATE: I think part of why I'm asking this is that on other blogs I've seen a lot of comments to the effect that the Railgun anime is frothy and doesn't have a lot of substance, concentrating mainly on the lesbian stalker. If they excised Mikoto's back story, then it's to be expected that what they'd end up with would be frothy concentration on the lesbian; that's all that's left.

UPDATE: I just took a look at the list of books in the series on Wikipedia. The Index anime is telling the story straight through in order. The first book in the series was the Index story arc, the second book was Aisa, and the third was Railgun's story. There are 19 books in the series so far including one that came out a week ago, and at this rate there's enough material out there for three seasons at least.

2 ANN says the manga started in 2007 and is being done by someone else. So what that suggests is that the Railgun anime (and the manga it's based on) are not canon and are "reimaginings", I think the word is. Ick.

3 Both the Index and Railgun manga covers credit the novelist for original work (gensaku, 原作) and the "someone else" for drawing pictures (sakuga, 作画); Amazon just calls them illustrators. How much that reflects actual authorship versus copyright and licensing issues, I can't tell.

I was hoping I could get first-hand comments from someone who has been following the Railgun anime.

Second best is this: without actually reading them (because I don't want spoilers) I tried searching the Wikipedia page containing descriptions of all the Railgun anime episodes to date, and the word "sister" and certain other critical keywords don't appear on the page.

My worst fears realized, in other words: Mikoto's back story is gone. The Railgun anime is to Index what Fumoffu was to Full Metal Panic.

No wonder people are complaining about it being fluff.

5 I was hoping I could get first-hand comments from someone who has been following the Railgun anime.

That would be me.

So far, there's been no mention of The Sisters, nor any sighting of them.  Of course, we've only gone through seven episodes of Railgun, so there's at least five or six more coming (ANN suggests there will be 12 episodes).

But the tone of Railgun has taken a slightly darker bent in the past two episodes, so maybe something is coming... though likely not, as they seem to be hinting at

While I dropped Index after six or seven episodes, I might have to try again... it sounds like it got better after I let it go.

There's a huge change in the continuity at the end of the Index story arc, at the end of ep 6. Eps 7-9 are Aisa's story arc, and it isn't very good. It's not terrible; it's just mediocre. The only important way it affects the long term story arc is that at the end of it Aisa moves in with Index and Touma.

Aisa is a McGuffin, not a character. You could skip those and begin again with ep 10, the first episode of Mikoto's story arc.

As to whether Index gets better, the thing about it is that it's an anthology. They've converted the first five or six books into anime episodes, and they're only as good as the books themselves were. The first book became eps 1-6 and they were medium good. The second book became eps 7-9 and they were not so fine.

The third book is eps 10-14 and they're a hell of a lot better, both because Railgun is a more interesting character and because what happens is more intense.

But will it continue to be good? The hints I've seen is that the next part of the series is going to suck. I hope I'm wrong, though.

For now I think I'm going to rewatch the Railgun arc before proceeding further, mainly because I think it's going to turn out to be the high point of the series.

8 Ditto what Wonderduck said.  The first four or five episodes of Railgun are 85% blech.  Not bad, just not good  -- too much lesbian stalker, her voice grates, and I keep having issues with a middle school police force.  Although I suppose it's an effort to "co-opt the enemy" and teach them civic responsibility.  Given their powers, they could be a royal pain; maybe the idea is to grab them young and teach them better. Which should make Mikoto a prime target for recruitment, right?

There's no mention of the Accelerator or the sisters.  In fact, I'd say that Mikoto's behavior pretty much precludes them being a part of this story.  Touma is making an increasing number of appearances, though.

I've got the entire season of Index on download, and it should be done by tomorrow.  I'll see if it gets better.  I stopped early in the Asia arc, as I recall.

9 I've been following Railgun, and, while the first four episodes are moderately "fluffy", there's definitely hints of something darker just below the surface.

I do know that the end of episode six of Railgun, and the whole climax of episode seven, are pretty much free of fluff; and while not quite as dark as Index, leave it obvious that Railgun can do serious when necessary.
