Rarity

Pete responds to my comment about the rarity of female readers of this blog:

Steven wrote: “So many of us in my immediate circle of anime blog-friends are men (like all of them) that it’s easy to overlook the fact that there are a lot of women fans out there too.” Not sure what he’s implying here. For myself, I never felt disconnected from female fans. Someone in my family was following Munto. And then there’s the club. But even in blogs I have Sasa, Jen, Hinano — just off the top of my head.

I'm the middle of three kids. My dad's hair was black, and my mom's hair was dark brown, but they had three kids and all three of us ended up being redheads. That's just how the dice landed; it was a 1/4 chance for each one, and overall a 1/64 chance of it happening that way.

Which means I grew up surrounded by redheads. I was used to thinking of them as being common, usual, normal. It took me a long time when I became an adult to realize that we're really rare. Natural redheads are a lot more rare than natural blondes, at least in the places I've lived.

Pete is married and has a daughter. With two women in his life, I don't think he realizes that women are, for the most part, mythical creatures and that his impression that they're common is due to observation bias, just like my assumption when I was a kid that redheads were common. (Hmmph; I bet he thinks half the human race is female. Silly man.)

1 You could probably tag this one with "engineer's disease," heh.

(Yeah, I'm an engineer too.)

Female?  Isn't that a sub-species of Catgirl, without the moé?

(Grin, duck, and run like hell.... or I would if there were any female readers around.)

3 Because I am too much of a pedant, I wish to point out that Pat can be a contraction for Patricia as easily as for Patrick.  Not that it is valid here, but...  Anyway, engineer or wannabe engineer here, which is partly Steven's fault due to his early blogging which discussed engineering.   It is quite possible that Steven interacts more with unrelated females then I do.
