I'm rewatching Petite Princess Yucie and I just noticed an interesting parallel. It's a slight spoiler for PPT and also for Card Captor Sakura but not a very major one. And it isn't very profound or earth shattering. Still, it goes below the fold.

In Card Captor Sakura when Shaoran is first introduced, he comes across as cold and arrogant and intimidating. He isn't very likeable. But that all changes when we start learning about his family. When Meilin arrives, our feelings about Shaoran change quite a lot and we begin to feel sympathy for him. (If there's any more whipped boy in anime, I don't know who it might be.)

And that's what Glenda is like in Petite Princess Yucie. When we first meet her she isn't very nice. She's arrogant, imperious, violent, insensitive. Then we meet her father and learn more about her backstory, and she becomes sympathetic. Indeed, by the end of the series she was my favorite character.
