World of Narue: getting into the rhythm

Author has watched the first DVD of World of Narue and doesn't like it. He dismissed it rather snidely, inspiring a semi-angry response, and an expansion of Author's reasons.

World of Narue is another series which you won't understand unless you get into the rhythm. It's low key. It's gentle. It's not driven. Of course, if you were unkind you might call it soporific.

The story picks up some when Narue's sister shows up and shoots her with an alien raygun. That's the fifth episode. It picks up even more in ep 6, when Narue gets really angry at Hajime.

You do have to sync with World of Narue to enjoy it. If your expectations are wrong, you're going to be deeply disappointed. It actually is pretty nice. That said, I won't go so far as to say that Author should give the second DVD a try. There are other things out there that are probably more worth watching.

UPDATE: Narue is a young otaku's dream girl. She's cute. She's a bit strange. She's a space alien. And most important, she's the one who pushes the relationship. For a shy young otaku, having a cute girl who is first to hug him, first to kiss him, and who has unusual and cool powers -- that's as good as it gets.

I agree that Narue has a rather gentle presentation that has no push to it.  It's like Hand Maid May or Ah My Goddess--if you like the characters, you'll like the show, but if you're watching for a story with depth and ideas (and action), one would be better off watching Divergence Eve.

I just finished it the other day, and while I liked it overall, it's like a walk through a very nice park--pleasant, memorable, a fun time while there, but not the sort of thing you can OMG about.  (To be honest, when the bad guys showed up in the last episode, I'd completely forgotten about them.)

My favorite character was Bathyscape.  I guess I got some kinda thing for powerful women with gray hair...

My favorite character was the deserter.

Well, actually, no. I think my favorite character was Hajime, but I have a thing for otaku meganekko.

I'm reposting a comment from Beckoning Chasm, who hasn't learned how to use the spoiler tag:

The deserter was:

I agree, that was a beautiful storyline, and with the follow-up, easily the best part of the whole series.

World of Narue does prove one good point, that a series "where everyone is nice to one another" doesn't have to mean "too dull to watch."

That's another show I owe to your reviews.  Thank you.  Shingu should be coming up "shortly" with a bit of luck...
