Wildlife

There's a place near here, on my route to the grocery store, where a bunch of blackberry bushes are right next to the sidewalk. And as blackberries will, they've been trying to take it over. The cyclone fence represents no barrier to them.

About four years ago it got so bad that you had to walk on the street to get past that point. And no one seemed to be doing anything about it. I got fed up and bought a hedge shear and spent a couple of hours one afternoon chopping them back.

Since then I've gotten in the habit of going over there every couple of months and doing it again. Today was that day.

I shove all the stuff I cut off into the gutter, because there isn't anywhere else to put it. It rots down pretty fast,  and eventually the street cleaner gets it.

I noticed a few days ago that the creek going past my part of the yard was quite a lot higher than usual. So after I got done with the blackberries, I went over to the park to see what was going on.

The beavers have built an entirely new dam, in a new location.

Unfortunately, their days are probably already numbered. I ran into Alex, the complex handyman, and he told me he'd already complained to the county about it.

Bummer.

1 Crap.  If only there were some way to teach them not to overdo it.

2 Unrelated, but you might be happy to know that a second season of "Dog Days" is in production:

At least it's a little something to help alleviate your anime dry spell.

4 If we could just teach them to install hydroelectric plants in their dams, we'd be all set...until the neo-Luddite green movement got wind of it, anyway.  Then they'd slap a restraining order on the beavers for keeping tadpoles from spawning or some such.

5 There is a park with a 'lake' in it up the street from me, and the beavers had built a pretty significant damn at the outflow into Fanno creek last winter.  The park is a wetlands preserve and the county was fine with the beavers having built the dam, but then all the people living in very nice houses around the lake complained about their back yards being washed away and the dam was removed, and the county has agreed to come back and keep it from being built up again.  I don't think they're making any attempt to trap or kill the beavers though.

6 The reason Alex has been complaining about these dams is because they flood some of our lawn.

7 Sure, just like the last time, I assume.  That's what I meant about not overdoing it. If they wouldn't flood the lawn, your maintenance guy might not mind them there.
