Real and virtual shopping malls

More and more people are doing their shopping online and relying on package delivery to get their goods. This is causing much grief and anguish among the top management of stores that rely on their presence in big shopping malls.

There are a bunch of reasons for this. One has to do with sale taxes. But I think another, which will become more and more influential as time goes on (unless something changes radically) is that no one ever died when a swarthy young man with a gun tried to shoot up a web site.

1 Here's an example of someone I want to punch:

The FBI said Saturday that there is no indication of a terrorism link in a shooting at a Seattle-area mall that killed 5.

"We have no indication this was a terrorism act," an assistant special agent in the FBI's Seattle office said at a press conference Saturday morning on the shooting. "There is no evidence to support that."

They've got pictures of the guy from the mall's security system and they're trying to say he's Hispanic. I say bullshit: that guy is Middle Eastern.

Looks like he made a clean get-away.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet two things:

1. The mall is a posted "no-gun" zone.

2. His name is "Mohammed".

3 He's been identified as "Arcan Cetin" and he's a Turk. So I was wrong about his name.

4 They got him! That was fast work, only about 24 hours!

5 Good.

Wouldn't be surprised if the media had conveniently left out his middle name, though.

Just a reminder - Washington State was one of those places which had tightened their gun laws because they wanted to 'do something' about gun violence.

7 Our hero had a blog in which he posted a picture of the head of ISIS. Imagine our surprise.

8 Man, we're so unhip here in Houston... this morning we had a guy start shooting people on the street, and it turned out to be a Nazi-symp lawyer.  How 20th century.   (Nine injured, one seriously.  Shooter DOA by Police).

9 I hope all the victims come through alive. And a cheer for the Houston police for doing what needed to be done and not messing around trying to capture the guy.

10 The guy in Washington confessed, so it's all over but the paperwork.

11 I know you like Wil Wheaton, but the man is dumb as a brick when it comes to guns and gun rights, and Pavlov's dog when it comes to a shooting, because he immediately blamed the NRA for Cetin (He really caught hell when his reflex kicked-in following the shooting in the courthouse in Minnesota, which just shows the kids that you need to read more than five words into an article and not have the attention span of a rabbit.).

I don't have to agree with someone about everything in order to like them.

I don't have to hate them because we disagree about something.

13 The irony is that indoor shopping malls gained popularity in part because of fears of street crime.

14 There's "mall walkers", who go to their local megamall several times a week in the morning and do laps.

They prefer it to doing laps outside because it's warm, dry, has drinking fountains and bathrooms, and it's always well lit.

And... it's perceived as being safer.
