Well, I can't say I'm happy with the episode. The battle was handled well, and it was exciting, and everyone contributed, and I believed the result (almost).
But the show has gotten really grim. The early part of this series was a delight, because it was so energetic and upbeat. It isn't like that any more. I can't believe the first part was like that by accident, and it's almost like the director has forgotten what made the early episodes so much fun -- or maybe I'm wrong, and he never knew.
Part of the problem is Rei. Every time she shows up she pours pain and fear all over the screen. I wish she was a minor character, though I know that isn't possible.
It was a character-building episode, really. The point of it was to show that Wakaba, Himawari, and Aoi could fight and win without Akane and without the vandreads. It was tough, and it required all three to take serious chances.
Anyway, at the end Akane is all better again, and she'll be back next episode. Unfortunately, so will Rei, putting a big wet blanket all over everything and snuffing out the joy.
UPDATE: What didn't I believe about the battle? First,
I actually DID like that the girls were able to defeat an enemy without docking. It's a nice departure from the whole "Why are we bothering with our cannons, just fire the damn Wave Motion Gun and get it over with?" thing.
