Summer Wars -- watch it!

Pete is looking for excuses to not watch Summer Wars. He isn't going to find any here, since I think it's an outstanding movie and well worth the time to watch. (But not yet. The only version available now seems to have been videotaped in a theater in Korea and has a Korean hardsub. The official DVD/BD release is March 11.)

Pete quotes someone who talks about the fact that Kenji doesn't go through any apparent personal growth in the movie. Which is true, and beside the point. The movie isn't about Kenji, it's about Natsuki. And for her it is a coming-of-age story. Over the course of those four days she changes a lot.

It's easy to see how someone could think it was about Kenji, given that for most of the movie the camera mainly concentrates on him. But that's because Kenji is the audience-viewpoint character. He is the observer (albeit not a passive one), but the story isn't really about him.

UPDATE: Just in passing, it's also a life-changing event for Kazuma, Natsuki's young cousin. And he changes a hell of a lot by the end of the movie, too.
