Shinmai Mao no Testament BURST -- ep 9

So we're finally moving forward again. They just changed direction. There was a tournament, with the bad guy challenging the good guys to 7 individual duels, with the majority winner getting the prize. Coming into this episode, the good guys won twice and the bad guys won twice. This is the fifth duel, between Basara (Our Hero) and Leohart (the usurper).

It's kind of hard to keep track of the players without a scorecard, so it's below the fold.

This is Basara, the Good Guy.

This is Basara's father. He's a ridiculously powerful fighter, but he's also a bit of a flake. He doesn't really come off as being very admirable. Basara trusts him, and it's obvious we're supposed to, too, but I won't be surprised if he ends up doing a face-heel-turn.

This is Leohart, the good Bad Guy. He's current reigning Lord of Hell, but he's a usurper. However, he's noble, honorable, fights fairly, cares about his subordinates and visits them when they've been injured, and all around rather difficult to dislike.

This is Mio, the prize. It's been stated that whoever wins the tournament gets her. She's the daughter of the former demon lord and rightful heir to the throne. She's also possessor of tremendous power, some her own and some supposedly directly received from her father.

This is Lars, a loose cannon. He fought one of the duels for the other side and won, but it is not by any means clear where his sympathies actually lie.

And here are the bad Bad Guys, the "council". They're trying to defeat both Leohart and Basara so they can take power themselves.

/images/08818.jpg

Basara becomes a super saiyajin and beats Leohart but does not kill him. So afterwards he offers his hand to Leohart, who takes it.

And the council, disappointed that no one died, summons this dude who looks to be the series big-bad. They think they can control him, but they're probably wrong.

I think it's pretty clear now how the series is going to end: Mio will give up all claims to the throne and abdicate in Leohart's favor. All she seems to want is to return to Earth and live with Basara and for the attacks on her to stop, and that's what will happen. But getting there is going to be a wild ride, because the bigbad is really tough.

1 In my too few years of watching anime I am surprised at how "mediocrity" migrates into "good" and how often stupid gratuitous stuff hides a good story. As you mentioned, the first season of this show was similar to this one in that regard.

2 Divergence Eve is the classic example of that. The fan service disguises, and ultimately detracts, from an amazingly good story.
