Shining Hearts -- ep 3

We're beginning to get into the story, at least a bit.

Our people find Kaguya on the beach. The doctor is called, and he says she'll be alright. She's taken to his office, the local hospital. She's wearing a strange purple teardrop pendant, and it seems to glow sometimes.

The bakery is in trouble. As a result of storm damage, their oven destroyed itself. Without it, they will be making no bread. Madera, the old lady, suggests that they visit Hank.

Hank is a dwarf. Hank is angry. Hank doesn't look like this. (I wonder if the name was a deliberate call-out?)

Actually, it's more like he's cranky. Anyway, he says he won't do it unless they pay him in advance, and they don't have the money for that, so it's a no-go. The real reason for that scene was to introduce Hank. He's got something strange in his workshop. It looks like a woman, only he's got it hanging on his wall, in a position which would kill a normal human being. (See "crucifixion".)

Pirate ships show up. That's a guess, but it's a good one. They don't signal to shore. They aren't displaying any kind of flag. Likely they intend to land at night and loot and sack the town. The palace declares a blackout for that night, and most of the royal guard travels down to the beach.

Our four have done their day's baking at Madera's shop, using her oven, and make their deliveries, albeit late.

Rick and Amil deliver bread to the hospital, and get invited in. Kaguya has wakened. That's when we find out her name. But she doesn't talk much, and passes out again. Then her pendant starts glowing really brightly and flies up into the air.

A couple of soldiers show up and demand that they obey the blackout. There's some ruckus. Meanwhile, up at Hank's shop, the woman-thing he's got hanging there seems to activate. Four light beams appear and seem to be searching, eventually they settle on a spot out in the sea, which starts glowing.

And later, she ends up firing a huge energy beam that hits the pirate ships and blows them to kingdom-come. (This is after the pirates fired a shot at the island, though it's not clear just what they hit.)

Next episode? Rick and Amil will team up with Xiaomei, the catgirl, and recover the glowing thing out at sea. Amil and the catgirl will wear bikinis. Rick and Hank will do something with some machine belonging to Hank. And then like-as-not Hank will fix their oven out of gratitude or as a result of barter, though that wasn't shown in the preview.

The other thing that happened at the end is that we saw a replay of when the girls originally found Rick himself on the beach, in nearly the same place. He was wearing armor, and had a nice looking long-sword. (How was he able to float with all that metal? We don't ask such questions, silly.) And we confirm that yes, he has lost all his memories. Aside from his name, he doesn't remember anything.

However, he has a feeling that he knows Kaguya, or has had dealings with her.

This is still fun to watch, albeit not massively compelling. Definitely grade B.

1 It's a series about Bread Making, that has a bunch of cute girls that the MC won't be dating, that has a cranky dwarf that's utterly ripped that has a Magic-girl-as-mecha-that-shoots-Nukes hanging in his work shop.  And there's also Elves around.

This series is both utterly restrained and completely nuts at the same time.  How, I'm not sure (probably Sega dictates), but it's still... an interesting watch.

2 It also has a human population of maybe 10,000, yet it is high-tech enough to produce steel for weapons and armor, not to mention enough paper so that they can use it for paper bags.

3 Millions of robots underground.

4 Also, if Hank is a callout .. I'm amazed that literally not one animeblogger that follows Happy Bread remarked upon it.

5 The steel is made by Dwarven magic, and the paper by Elven magic. Or maybe they have some trade with the outside world.

Rick rode a plank, passed out on top of it, got tipped off onto the beach when it washed ashore, and was heavy enough, unlike the plank,  not to get washed back out with a subsequent wave.

I want to know who's in the palace, commanding those troops & issuing things like blackout orders.

In the game, Princess Rufina and Prince Ragnus are important characters. And there's a queen who shows up now and again. That's from Wikipedia.

On the other hand, the anime may not be following the game. Wikipedia doesn't list Hank (the dwarf) as a character, but it's clear he's going to be an important one.
