Sekirei -- three views

The other day I downloaded a scanlation of the first part of Sekirei, and found it to be quite ecchi. So I got curious, and downloaded the broadcast version (i.e. censored) and DVD rip (uncensored) of the anime as well. I just went through the first episode to try to compare all three, and I've got NSFW pictures below the fold.

Minato meets Musubi by having her fall on him out of the sky. By all rights it ought to have killed him, but this is a fantasy. Once things stopped moving, this is his first view of her in the manga:

And the two versions from the anime:

There's a bunch of action, and then they sleep for the night in his apartment. She's wearing one of his shirts, and takes it off, presenting her 1.0 Rushunas:

The anime does a lot more with this, as you might imagine.

Doofus's head got in the way.

In this case the censorship was just a tighter camera angle.

Flowers, eh? Well, could be worse. (How? Could be bats!)

Minato flees outside and is consumed by memories of the wonders he's just viewed.

And later there's another battle, where one of the opponents uses the patented "Shred the pretty girl's shirt without putting a mark on her tits" attack. That was a favorite in Ikki Tousen, too.

And this time to censor it they simply made her anatomically incomplete. You'd think they could have added some more energy remnants in the right places instead, wouldn't you?

Even in the age of Photoshop, stuff like the energy trails are hard to add to an image, let alone an animation. It's the consistency that causes problems. The new energy trails have to be almost identical in color and form to the old ones, because the human eye is extremely good at picking out inconsistencies in brightly-colored objects, even ones that flash by for mere fractions of a second. Since the original energy trails were probably made using a pile of special effects filters, the exact settings for which even the original artists have probably long forgotten as they moved on to newer episodes, getting them just right would be a long enough process of trial and error for a single image, and could easily take months for an animation.

In comparison, covering a nipple with a single-toned flesh color, or even a shaded flesh color, is very easy and quick.
