Saki -- ep 19, scoring the victory

Oh, heck. I guess all of this is a spoiler, so it goes below the fold. (Sorry about putting it on the front page for a few minutes.)

OK, so here's Saki's hand:

/images/02955.jpg

4 one circles
4 two circles
4 three circles
3 four circles
2 five circles, one of which is red.

Here's how Saki announces it: "Tsumo. Chinitsu. Toitoi. San ankou. San kantsu. Aka ichi. Rinshan Kaiho." 32,000 points.

Lessee if Wikipedia can help us out here, using two articles.

First, it looks like it's considered a closed hand, "a hand composed exclusively of tiles drawn from the wall except for a winning tile." Saki used Koromo's discard to make her first kan, but that was all. (If it's an open hand, there aren't enough points for a counted yakuman.)

Second, Saki isn't the dealer (i.e. east). Yumi is.

Closed hand Tsumo: 1 han (or zero if it's an open hand)

chinitsu (single suit hand): 6 han (or 5 if it's an open hand)

toitoi (all pons/kans): 2 han

san anko (three concealed pons/kans): 2 han

san kantsu (3 kans): 2 han

aka ichi (1 red dora, the 5): 1 han

So it's a total of 14 han. Since it's 13 or more, that makes it a kazoe yakuman, a "counted yakuman". That means it qualifies as a yakuman simply because of the huge number of han, without being one of the special strange hands specifically called out as being yakuman. (If it were an open hand it would be 12 han, which isn't enough.)

A yakuman is a limit hand, which pays 48,000 to the dealer or 32,000 to a non-dealer. Saki is not the dealer, so she gets 32,000. And because of Rinshan Kaiho, the fact that she made her first kan using Koromo's discard ("daimin kan"), all the points come from Koromo. Koromo's score drops by 32,000 and Saki's rises by 32,000, leaving Saki with a 500 point lead, and a victory.

Did I get all that right?

UPDATE: Apparently not. It's an open hand, not a closed hand. But the Rinshan Kaihou is worth one han, so she got exactly 13 han, just enough to qualify for a counted yakuman.

Which means that the red five, her last draw, was necessary in order for her to win. That's spooky.

1 I think you have that down correctly. At least, that's definitely the final point total of the hand and the final score deficit between Saki and Koromo.

Yeah, she definitely gets 32,000 points. I was just curious how she got there.

3 You know, looking it up, I was wrong about the continuation rules. The current dealer stays, and another hand begins, if the dealer wins -or is tenpai-. So theoretically, it could continue hand after hand so long as nobody declares a win and the dealer keeps reaching tenpai before an exhaustive draw.

That seems to be what Kana was planning on as her only hope of winning (the tournament).

Of course, the chance of it happening enough times to give Kana a real shot was negligible, given that she needed Koromo and Saki to be no-ten (isn't that the term?) every single time. Yeah, right...

5 It is an open hand.  You forgot to count Saki's trademark rinshan kaihou, which gives her another yaku.

6 So she nailed 13 han exactly, and even needed the red five to do it? Sounds like her.
