Saki -- a theory

We've talked about the notable absence of panchira in Saki, considering that it's pretty obviously a classic Gonzo fan service show. And the reason why there is no panchira is because the TV station that's broadcasting it has a "no panchira" rule.

Gonzo has been censoring bathing scenes (with the usual steam) which we can be pretty sure will be mostly uncensored in the DVD release. But I have a theory about panchira: there will be a lot of it. How?

The short skirts that Nodoka and Saki wear have white slips inside them. Have you ever seen seifuku in anime with white slips? I never have. So my prediction? Shots like this:

The slips will be removed, and we'll get panties instead. There won't be any sign of slips in the DVD version.

UPDATE: Interesting supporting evidence: in episode 4, when Saki and Nodoka have changed into the meido costumes, there's a picture of Saki's seifuku stacked up in a locker.

We know it's Saki's because of the briefcase. Shirt, scarf, and skirt are all there, but there's no sign of a slip. And I don't buy that it's built into the skirt; in that case the skirt wouldn't lay so flat. I think it was omitted from this scene because in the end it'll be gone everywhere, and it wasn't needed here to satisfy broadcast standards.

Also, note that there's a layering mistake on Saki's skirt and slip in the first picture above. In fact, there are two.

Hey, these things are important, you know.

Well, I don't have anything else to blog about tonight.

You were looking up the romaji, too. Try katakana: パンチラ or hiragana ぱんちら

(The katakana turns up 6,910,000 hits.)

6 Great - now that you've mentioned this, I spent the entirety of this weeks episode watching the hemlines of the characters skirts. I hope you are proud of yourself.

Even in just the OP there are a number of shot where it should be visible but isn't (such as the shot of Saki with her skirt blowing in the wind which turns into the title card). Either it's just really sloppy animation continuity or, more likely, you are absolutely correct.

7 Eeeek on the Google results with Katakana and Hiragana. Infared shots of a girls panties?...Anyway I saw episode 8 of Saki last night. If they take away the steam in that one it is going to be a buy for me.

8 Months later I stumble on this again, and just wanted to clear something up: I was wrong. On the release DVDs, the slips are still there and we still don't see any panties.

10 Upon further reflection, it's obvious what happened to her slip in the second picture: she's wearing it under the meido outfit.  Indeed, that's why there are no underthings visible, either.

Obvious really, and it only took us a year-and-a-half to figure it out.
