Rocket Girls -- why not?

Pete asks, if I like Saki because she's strong willed, why not Yukari in Rocket Girls?

Saki is strong-willed and nice. Yukari is strong-willed and sullen. Saki suffers from parental abandonment, and is trying to get on with her life. Yukari suffers from parental abandonment, and it has warped her entire life. That's not true strength.

I like Saki, but I didn't find Yukari to be sympathetic. And there wasn't anything else in Rocket Girls to attract me, whereas there was a hell of a lot that repelled me strongly. (Well, I liked Matsuri but that wasn't enough.)

Yukari and Saki are both sixteen. But Saki feels like an adult to me. She's got her act together. Yukari isn't. Deep down, Yukari is a brat having an extended tantrum.

Pete didn't actually ask about Yukari; he asked about Akane, the third girl to become an astronaut. The answer to his question is that she only shows up in the second half of the series, and I'd already gotten fed up with it and stopped watching before her arc began.

1 A lot of great stories start out when the author thinks, "What if." What if a person could play a 0 /+ - game of Majhong every time. Also in learning a sport you build skill by studying the techniques, strategies, and intellectual aspects, but you also deliberately work on involving your subconscious. It can get kind of spooky sometimes. I've experienced the no thought pound the opponents ass zone twice in my life. It was like I wasn't doing it, I was just somewhere watching it. So for me it is not a great leap to believe in what Saki is doing no matter what the odds.
