Random Curiosity Fall 2014 preview

Here's RandomC's Fall 2014 preview, and it's another disaster of a season. (I always say that, don't I?) The only thing I have to look forward to is the Mouretsu Pirate movie coming out on BD in November, and a Strike Witches OVA.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis is this season's "Girls with big swords and big jugs" series, replacing Momo Kyun Sword from the summer season.

Monty Python failed to summarize Proust in 30 seconds; can Japan do it in 12 episodes? (Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete).

Grisaia no Kajitsu is this season's "Only guy at a girl's school" series. And where have we seen that before?

Sora no Method looks to be a replay of that show a few months back about a group of childhood friends reunited, where one of the girls was a ghost. I don't remember its name, and I didn't watch it.

Ai Tenchi Muyou! looks like it's going to be derivative nonsense, hijacked as a way of advertising an otherwise undistinguished city. The real question is where in the continuity it fits. If it's after Tenchi becomes a god, then it's hard to see how there's any challenge for him. The art looks good but the concept is idiocy and the 5-minute format doesn't seem like it'll be any good.

Orenchi no Furo Jirou has a rubber duck. It doesn't have a mermaid; he's a merman. Blech.

Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de is about a high school literature club (1 guy, 4 girls) who all gain super powers. Problem is, there isn't any crisis for them to solve or appropriate enemies to fight. What, exactly, the show will be about isn't clear; it may turn into a pretty standard harem show.

Well... Trinity Seven might, might be OK. The seven girls of the harem are all cute, but there are a hundred ways this could crater if the writer is lazy or unimaginative.

There is no damned way that Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai can be any good. It will certainly be worth looting for the top rotation, but to actually watch? Forget it.

I watched (and hated) Anime Runner Kuromi; I don't need to watch ShiroBako.

Did someone order a switch-hitter show? Yeesh; Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu. (barf) Clearly a case of "embrace the stupid", but not for me, thanks. (But probably worth looting.)

I think we're going to need more blades in our 8-bladed razor. How about 30 girls in a "cute high school girl" show? Haven't come close to that since Negima. And now we have Girlfriend (Kari). Potentially it might be fully one hundred girls. The website for the show says it will be running on AT-X. Does that mean there will be scenes worthy of AT-X? The mind boggles...

OK, so maybe one show. If I'm lucky. And several fully worthy of looting.

1 Not sure what the word "another" is supposed to mean. I'm following 3 series in-season, which is more than usual.

2 Let me look... mmm... uh-huh... um...

...no Rio Rainbow Gate!, the sequel?

Greatest season ever!

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, or AnoHana.  I don't think you would like it, but it was very well done.

4 Pixy, you're absolutely right, and you're 100% correct: it was very well done indeed.  However, it amuses me to no end that...

"...a group of childhood friends reunited, where one of the girls was a ghost."

...describes the plot of Kanon to a tee.

5 Only one hundred girls in Kari? Come 2015 Winter, Idolmaster Cinderella Girls offers 180 characters.

Okay, I jest. If anything CG is more focused than the original TV series (they have an officially innaugurated main character, which did not exist in the classic). But still... The possibilities are out there.

6 Whatever happened with that show that was supposed to be about how every individual prefecture in Japan had its own magical girl? I think I watched the first episode and then let it go.

7 That did not ring a bell. Sunred is where every city in Japan has its own (super)hero, battling the forces of evil, usually with his fists, but that's different, right?

...describes the plot of Kanon to a tee.

That may be so, but clasics like that do not occur in every season, so the probabiliy for Method lies in the opposite direction. Also, sola sucked. Keep in mind that Kanon was not an original story.

9 The show I was thinking of was Mahou Shoujo Taisen.

WHAT?! No Nobunaga alt history series?! You're slipping, Japan.

Most of what I'll watch will be the continuation of previous series. Not likely to pick up too many new ones.

11 Wonderduck, please don't do that.

12 I watched a good chunk of Mahou Shoujo Taisen, some time that I had half an hour to kill. It's... not terr... no, it was kind of terrible. Not -bad- in a technical sense, but not really worth much. There was one decent-ish little story, but you can't develop much in a nine-minute arc.

13 As you say.  I won't apologize for the words, but I will for saying them here.
