Pygmalion the battered

The Pygmalion legend from Greek mythology is one of the best remembered, perhaps because it cuts deep. Pygmalion was a great sculptor, and eventually created a statue of a beautiful woman out of marble.

He fell in love with the statue and felt he could not live without her. Eventually Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love, made the statue real, and they lived happily ever after. Or something like that.

What if the statue had turned out to be a tsundere? That may be the subtext of the upcoming anime Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens. It's due to start in October.

Jin is a talented sculptor, and working with a section of a Kannagi tree (whatever that is) he creates a statue of a girl. Turns out that there was a goddess in the tree, and she possesses the statue and makes it real. She seems to have a lot of goddessing to catch up on, and she hauls Jin around with her as she does it. Also featured will be a couple of mikos, though it seems they don't wear traditional dress.

This guy speculates that it could be a Haruhi-alike, with Nagi, the goddess, having that same kind of manic energy. But based on the art on its home page, it also seems to be part of the new wave of cheap animation which also includes Tweeny Witches and the new "Someday's Dreamers" series. As in there's no counter-shading and everything looks flat.
