Punchline -- ep 1

Keep, surprisingly. It wasn't on my list but I saw it go by on the torrents and got curious. It's better than it has any right to be.

It's a fan-service comedy in which the fan-service is actually a part of the story. So the panty shots are not totally gratuitous. Unlike Triage-X, the story in this series doesn't exist solely as an excuse to give us fan service.

NSFW below the fold.

The show begins with a group of terrorists hijacking a bus, for some reason or other. Our hero Yuuta is one of the passengers. They're being chased down a freeway by about 20 cop cars, but then a girl in a strange costume on a weird motorcycle guns past everyone and gets in front of the bus, and jumps through the windshield.

She announces herself as "Strange Juice", and then clobbers all the bad guys, but misses one because he isn't wearing a regulation bad guy costume.

In the course of this Yuuta sees some panties and spikes. Turns out he's got a lot of power, though it's never come out before.

Well, he takes the bad guy into the water and they both almost drown. But the bad guy chants something as they're falling. Two girls, identity unknown, pull him to shore, and while he's laying there suddenly a strange light comes out of the sky and hits him.

It was some sort of spirit, and it possessed his body and kicked his spirit out. So now he's a ghost. The body still lives, but it'll take something special for him to get back inside it, a strange magic book.

This spirit cat is our source for plot exposition. They're in the building where Yuuta lives, but the Yuuta ghost cannot enter his room because the whole place is full of anti-spirit charms. The cat tells him he has to find the book to have any chance.

Turns out his neighbors are all cute girls. Also turns out that one of them is Strange Juice, and the others are supporting staff. Turns out that there's a Secret Underground Baseâ„¢ beneath the building.

But that's not the most important thing. We also learn that if Yuuta sees a girl's underwear, he spikes and causes an asteroid to hit the planet exterminating all life.

Fortunately, it gets better. Spirits are not constrained by the laws of physics and they can travel backwards in time. So when he blows up the planet (which happens twice in the first episode) he can undo the damage.

This is the first Noitamina show I've ever watched, and I was pleasantly surprised. This ain't great art and makes no pretensions in that regard, but it's silly fun, and that's not a bad thing.

And if Yuuta ever sees the girls in the bath, he'll probably blow up the whole solar system.

UPDATE: By the way, the seiyuu doing the cat is a newbie. This is her second role. But all the other seiyuu are top drawer, and that's usually a good sign. I didn't notice any obnoxious animation short cuts either, so it looks like this has a decent budget.

1 This appears to be the least likely Noitamina show ever.  The whole point of the concept was to try and increase the appeal of anime to more than the usual young male demographic... pantyshots aren't the way you usually do that.

2 The name is, in fact, a joke on "panty shot", given the way both are said in Japanese.  This should, hopefully, not have been lost on anyone that watched the OP.
It's a crazy show, so far, but I like crazy shows that keep it up.  A lot of Gainax touches, which can really work if you run with it.   I also think a little SHAFT showed up in how well they drew those panty shots.
The seiyuu for the cat also did Mashiro from "Engaged to the Unidentified".  Which was a really good role.  Hopefully she has a good future, though it's hard to say how she would do with a normally voiced character.  (Mashiro was many levels of insanely cute.  A reoccurring problem for the character in the series.)

3 Whoever drew those blue-striped panties really put his heart into it; even ignoring the subject matter, that's beautifully drawn.

4 Bit of a shame really.  Noitamina did field a very strong anime last year in Ping-Pong the Animation.  Strong story (the manga it was adapted from was great), very experimental animation, great voice acting and soundtrack.  Basically the complete package.  And now they're doing a panty show?

I guess you take what you can get. All the things you said not withstanding, how did the BDs for the Ping Pong series sell? According to this, the boxed set for the series didn't sell very well at all.

They don't do shows for the hell of it; it's a business, and most of the income comes from sales of DVDs and BDs. Like it or not, fan service shows sell.

Which is to say, maybe there just weren't any artsy fartsy shows to fill this slot this season.
