Ouch!!

/images/07439.jpg

Lots of shows have featured a girl riding on a broom stick, or a magic staff, or (in this case) a flying halberd. And it's always seemed to me as if it must be very painful to carry your entire weight on just a small pole that way.

The only show that ever addressed that point was the Magic User's Club OVA, where at one point one of the girls strapped a pillow onto her broomstick to ride on.

In this case, at least, Anya has that great big dress folded up under her, which should help a little.

1 Wasn't there a training gag in Magic Users Club where Sae was trying to sit on playground gymnastics bars, too?  They liked making fun of this.

The broom training episode in Strike Witches hung a huge lampshade on it, too.  Mostly for the fanservice, but, well, it was Strike Witches.

It always made more sense to me when characters rode their brooms or staffs sidesaddle...  I'm pretty sure that happened in Shining Hearts:SnP and Sasami:MGC (only one character there, though).  Probably a few others I don't recall offhand.

2 All the members of the club in MUC had to practice on the bars, and a couple of them rode their brooms side-saddle. Yeah, Strike Witches II did make a gag out of it, only it wasn't pain, it was pleasure (as it were).

3 It's not something I studied in any depth, but I know that early modern European tales and depictions of witches were quite frequently very sexualized. The whole "riding a broomstick" thing might well have been a part of that.
