Offbeat stuff

I've been going through the listing of available titles at Bob's Corner Store, looking for things that are worth buying that I haven't heard of.

I've found a few that look interesting. My next order won't be until early August, when the next volume of Gurren Lagann and the final volume of Tweeny Witches are out, but when that time comes I think I'm going to include Kakurenbo. It's cheap and it's short and it looks like it's excellent.

Rescue Me Mave-Chan looks like silly fun, especially at the price. (I'm not even slightly interested in Yukikaze, the series this is spun-off from, but this looks to be a lot different.)

And I'm somewhat tempted by Sorcerer (sic) Hunters (originally "Bakuretsu Hunter"). Hayashibara is in it, and it loks to have lots of combat, lots of magic, and a fair amount of fan service. The only real concern I have is that the characters will be off-putting, and there isn't likely to be much of a long-term story. I get the impression this is pretty episodic. The nominal protagonist, Gateau Carrot, sounds like a class-A jerk.

At $45, the price is a bit high for "what the hell, let's take a chance", so any of you know anything about it?

Chocolat, the big red-head, has the same seiyuu as Mihoshi so that could be a shock. (Presumably the voice is a lot different.)

By the way, anyone whose comment in response to this thread includes the phrase "You might also want to consider" or any semantic equivalent will be boiled in oil. Just thought I'd mention that. That's an unconditional banning offense, even if you think you're joking.

I absolutely despise that phrase, and using it to goose me isn't funny. Don't do it.

1 I don't know if this will be offputting or not for you, but one of the characters in Bakuretsu Hunter is named Tira.  Tira Misu, to be exact.  Which is funny once, and I just ruined it for you.

I don't get the joke. (Is it "tear", as in "crying", and indicative of angst?)

Someone just wrote to me to say that Kakurenbo

3 Nope, tiramisu is a type of dessert.

4 Sorcerer Hunters is okay.  The premise is simple enough and, what I have of the series, there are some really good episodes.  The one that stands out in my mind involves some kind of lake spirit thing trying to seduce the main character.  Very good episode, but it's been so long that I couldn't tell you why anymore.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything beyond episode...nine?  I had started collecting it on VHS (back when VHS was still around) and then stopped cause I was broke.  Then when I had cash again I picked up the first volume of the Essential Anime edition and stopped cause, well, there was always something else.  It is very episodic, at least in the beginning, but I do believe a larger story kicks in eventually.

Sorry, can't help you more then that.

Also, tiramisu is the best dessert EVAR!

5 Sorcerer Hunters is a fun bit of fluff; you probably won't mind watching some of it, but you may not stick around for the whole series.  Though there is plenty of fan service, particularly if that "complete collection" includes the OVAs.

The protagonist of the series is actually Carrot, though whether that's an improvement over Gateau is another question entirely.  I'll leave you to discover the true nature of Chocolate and Tira for yourself.

6 Whaddaya mean, "sic"? That's spelled correctly. Not our fault Disney got it wrong. Look it up! ;p

Was a fun show. Light-hearted fun, sometimes pervy, sometimes not. Golden Boy with a fantasy motif and not as much budget. Gratuitously re-used transformation sequences.

Saw Mave-chan at A-kon; Spoon had it playing in the video staff room for a bit. I dunno. It's cute, but pretty manipulative of the viewer, even though it's coming right out and saying that that's what it's doing.

Regarding the spelling of "sorcerer" I stand corrected. (And all these years I've been spelling it "sorceror". Ah well...)

Bob says its 775 minutes, which would be 31 25-minute episodes.

Or 26 25-minute episodes and 3 30-minute episodes. So it looks like it does include the OVA.

Carrot was the one I was thinking of when I wrote "Gateau". He's the skirt chaser, and he sounds like a real jerk.

Thought that might be the case.

Oh yeah, fair warning: This show does borrow from Urusei Yatsura a little.

The last time you mentioned it, you hadn't watched Tweeny Witches 2 yet.  Has that changed, or are you buying 3 "just because"?

I just watched episodes 5 and 6, and I haven't really decided whether I'm going to keep going myself, I really can't stand to watch more than 2 episodes at a time, which is normally a bad sign.

10 I haven't watched any more of Tweeny Witches. I am going to buy the last one for completeness, and I haven't totally given up on the series, though it's low on my list.

My own Mave-chan entry is something one might want to debate after seeing the show, but it's not good as a preview. It's intentionally cryptic, in order to avoid spoiling, yet still spoils the ending (because I think it's a poorly designed ending).

After seeing it, I think it wasn't worth the trouble even for $8. A regular DVD episode of the same 24 minute length is $5; an episode of Strike Witches at BOST is $3, and here they offer something that is not some kind of cinematic masterpiece to command a premium.

I've seen a few episodes of Sorcerer Hunters... seems to be basically Urusei Yatsura, only with bigger and bouncier boobs and two near-naked tsunderes who desperately want to bed the protagonist (catfight every episode!), who in turn wants to bed every female he encounters *except* the two who are actually interested in him. Carrot is actually quite vicious in how he goes about trying to bang any other girl he can; the only thing keeping him from becoming a rapist is his pure, blinding incompetance.

13 Well, I'm convinced, whether Steven is or not.  Not for me.

14 Am I the only one who doesn't understand the whole "I'm interested only in those who aren't interested" style of lech?  I mean, if there's an actual *reason* he's not attracted to one or more specific people ( like "she's insane" ). . .

15 In old sexist Russia this counter-interest is considered a female trait. There's even a saying to the effect of "the less we like the woman, the more she likes us" (IIRC it originates in a great classic poem "Eugeny Onegin"). However, in an explicit folk remake to the same, it's turned backwards in a kind of subversion, making it tantamount to Carrot.

I liked Sorcerer Hunters; it's fluffy and too long and the middle drags, but overall it was fun and it had a great ending.  I wouldn't recommend it highly, but I liked it.

Most of the characters are named after food, by the way.
