Non-optimal solutions

I eat my peas with honey.
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
but it keeps them on my knife.

I learned that rhyme when I was a kid and I have no idea where it came from. Probably my grandmother, though. She also taught me this:

While the organ peeled potatoes
Lard was rendered by the choir.
And the sexton rang the dishrag.
Someone set the church on fire!

"Holy Smokes!" the preacher shouted
In his rush he lost his hair.
Now his head resembles Heaven,
For there is no parting there.

I might mention that my grandmother was the daughter of a Methodist minister. Also:

Mother, may I go out for a swim?
Yes, my darling daughter.
Hang your clothes on the hickory limb,
But don't go near the water.
