Newz 1

It looks like the new shows Umisho and Moetan are taking the low road.

Meanwhile, Ouran High School Host Club has been licensed by Funimation. Hung says that when it comes to Haruhis...

Fujioka beats Suzumiya, hands down.

Oh, you done it now, boy.

1 I was unimpressed by Ouran; it's not a bad show, but it's not good enough to overcome its genre. So if you like that genre, fine.  (I'm not certain that Haruhi Suzumiya is good enough to overcome its genre either - but I like that genre.)

On the burnout - yeah.  If blogging about your hobby overtakes your hobby, probably time to take a step back.

Pauses.

Considers where one hopes to earn one's future income.

No!  Nonsense!  Obsessive blogging about blogging is the foundation of all that's right and makes Pixy money!

Amazingly, I have not been spoiled despite reading 4chan fairly regularly (oy, boredom). Ironically, spoilers don't bother me - which was a good thing, because when you're working on a show, sometimes you don't get the option of watching it in sequence to find out what happens. If the translator's dropping by to ask how something in ep 25 is worded, you probably need to know how events came to that pass...

Ran into Ouran at the university club last year. I'll have to admit that there was some resistance, but eventually I sat down to watch a few episodes, and it was fairly enjoyable. Utena without the symbolism and pretentiousness (but what's Utena without the symbolism and pretentiousness, friggin' jokes about Chu-Chu?)

4 Ouran even had a parody of Utena (with an all female school).

5 A couple of the Umisho pictures nicely illustrate why the heart-shape is the symbol of romance.

6 Check out http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=851 for another theory on how the heart symbol became synonymous with romance...

7 I don't know that I agree with the assertion that Ouran Haruhi beats Haruhi Haruhi, but it's close either way... and Ouran was very, VERY good, which surprised the halibut outta me.  I'd put it third (behind Kanon '06 and Haruhi) of the 2006 shows.

8 The best thing about the 4chan joke is that only 4channers would find it funny.

9 It is a difficult toss-up between Fujioka and Suzumiya.  Both were very fun series to watch.  I think given the tighter nature of the series, I'd give Suzumiya the edge, but both are excellent series.  Given some of the other dreck that's been licensed, the delay at picking up a good and popular series like Ouran surprised me.  At Otakon, the number of Ouran cosplayers easily outnumbered the Haruhi cosplayers.  Given that Ouran is at heart a Shoujo series, while Haruhi has a wider target audience and is already out on DVD, this was especially surprising.

10 Ouran, from my perspective, is a great example of a how a fansub can help later sales. I finished grabbing the fansub just days before they announced the license. Reverse harem is certainly not a genre I'm interested in, but I downloaded it based on word of mouth. Had I just stumbled across this show six months from now, I wouldn't take a chance on it sight unseen. Now I'm going to be buying it.

11 In Evangelion news, I'm informed that Anno has announced he will be taking a second run at Eva. Yup, he's doing a new Eva TV series, telling the same story, except this time he's going to "do it right."
Heh.

Is this over and above the movies? A TV series in addition? Ye Gods.

The mind boggles to think about what he might consider "doing it right".
