Bleah! Bleah! Ick!

Yuck:

When beautiful Tooru transferred to an all-boys school, he received a warm welcome...but little did he know that his new classmates had nominated him for the academy's "Princess System." The lovely campus "Princesses" must dress as girls (in frilly Gothic Lolita costumes) at school events in order to lighten the stolid masculine atmosphere. Tooru balks at first, but soon comes to realize the advantages of being a "Princess."

Eeew! Who comes up with these ideas? Who is the audience for this? I'm really not sure I want to know. Is this for the Yaoi crowd?

AnimeNFO categorizes it as "shounen ai" (boy love), which is even more bleah/ick/eew.

1 Considering that Otome wa Boku was such as smashing success, this was pretty much inevitable.

2 Except that this came out at the same time as Otome wo Boku. There's no real way it could be a response.

3 well I suppose some parallel to shoj ai (one of my fav sub genres) was to come around here eventually. Only fair I suppose...

4 I don't have any interest in shojou ai either. Maria-sama ga miteru, for instance. Even though it features several seiyuu I like, I'm not interested.

5 Ick. Go back to talking about Shingu!. I'm suddenly not nearly as tired of it as I thought I was.

6 I find Marimite a lot more humorous for the various spinoff fan stuff than the actual show (which I just don't enjoy...) The characters are a lot more fun in, say, a curtain-fire shooter than in a tendentious anime.

But you DO need to recognize, if not individual characters, at least the uniform. It'll show up here and there.

As far as the yaoi stuff, well, okay, so long as I don't have to watch it - and if it stays in its own series, I don't have to watch it. It's when it comes and invades series I'm otherwise watching that it becomes a problem...

7 'Curtain-fire shooter'?

8 I'll second metaphysician's question, with an additional tag of my own: huh?

9 Hm... Japanese term is "danmaku". Basically those games are along the lines of oldies like 1942, vertically-scrolling shoot-'em-up games where you're trying to shoot lots of enemies, a boss at the end of every level, and not get shot.

Now turn the dial up to 11. ;p (Or more realistically, in the hundreds. This is the sort of thing an arcade programmer would look at you and say "man, I can't do that to the poor gamer!" They call it curtain-fire because it's more or less descriptive.)

Best-known example are the Touhou games - if you're up for some serious challenge, download one of the demos. I personally can't get past 'em on anything harder than "normal", much less the full games. But it's quite fun.

10 Having actually seen Princess Princess I'm afraid I have to report... it isn't that bad.  No substance to speak of, but amusing in its way.  It isn't any more shounen ai than, say, Fruits Basket, and leagues less fey than something like Kyou Kara Maou or [shudder] Sukisyo. Although my extremely feeble gaydar insists that the protagonist of Princess Princess is gay as a cavalier, there wasn't really any romance or love-polyhedroning going on.  The biggest complaint I'd have about the show was that nothing ever really happens.  It's just a light high school comedy with cross-dressing.

11 As for the audience, pretty much the same one as the Fruits Basket crowd - teenaged girls.  Lots and lots of squeeing teenaged girls wearing goofy cosplay hats.

12 Ah, okay.  Thats the kind of thing I usually think of as a "side scrolling" or "top scrolling" shooter.  Never been a big fan of the genre.

I feel soiled.
