Mouretsu Pirates -- gamanshite

I wish I had something else to talk about, but it's the only series going right now that I'm even faintly interested in. So sorry for being so one-tracked. And now for yet more commentary about Mouretsu Pirates, spoilers for ep 10, below the fold.

(Maybe I should rename the site Chizumatic Pirates.)

After the fight, Gruier lost her nerve and started to panic. And it was for Marika to try to steady her. It was a challenge, and Marika did it well. And the buildup was to her saying,

Dakara gaman shite. Anata wa Princess Gruier Serenity deshou?

The Crunchyroll translation of that first part was "Keep it in reserve". Which didn't really address the point of the situation, or make a lot of sense. I think I would have made it "So be strong. You are Princess Gruier Serenity, aren't you?"

我慢 gaman is the key word, which means patience, endurance, self control. shite is the polite imperative of suru (isn't it?) which means "to do". So gaman shite means something like control yourself or be patient.

The remainder of that conversation shows that Gruier got the message. She got a grip, and she didn't fire them and order them home. It's looking like this is going to be a life-changing experience for her.

But it didn't make sense in terms of that translation. The real issue wasn't whether they inform the Serenity fleet that Gruier is there. The real issue was for Gruier to understand that this was a shooting situation, and that Bentenmaru was going to do some of the shooting, at Serenity ships. The real reason Gruier wanted to contact the Serenity fleet was in hopes that she could prevent it from becoming a shooting situation -- and what Marika really got across was that Gruier couldn't do that.

And now Gruier accepts it.

1 Man, you're so polite. My first thought was "suck it up".

2 Well, Marika couldn't be so crude to her customer, a princess, for fear of getting fired from the job and alienating the Kingdom of Serenity forever. Besides, she's not like that.

3 Besides the customer-service angle, Marika is very status-conscious. Gruelle being a princess is a big deal to her, making it all the more satisfying

6 Well, if you're in the mood for some piracy:  If you were to become a space pirate, which member of the Bentenmaru crew would you be?  Choose by character traits, skills sets, or both.

7 I don't think I'd really be any of them. I'm not cool enough.
