Potential battle, and Marika handled it well.
More interesting, she caught her bridge crew by surprise a couple of times with her orders. And once they heard what she said, they enthusiastically obeyed.
I find myself really liking Courier. She's wonderfully enthusiastic, and just plain fun. And she's very, very competent.
Gruelle continues to be a pleasant surprise. She's not acting like a spoiled brat. She seems quite adult for her age. She understands that there are times when presence is needed, and times when she should loosen up.
But it was Marika at the beginning who was the most pleasant surprise. She's really gotten it together. She doesn't panic when things go sour. I guess we already knew that from her battle in Odette II, but it's nice to see that it's still the case. She's thinking all the time, constantly planning. And, in fact, that's exactly what she needs to be doing in that job. It looks like she's earning the respect and confidence of her bridge crew.
And she's going to need it, because it looks like Bentenmaru and Barbarossa are on a collision course.
I wonder why Chiaki's father told Chiaki to inform Marika of their competing contract? Bentenmaru and Barbarossa have been friends in the past, even to the point of letting Chiaki go onto the Bentenmaru to participate in training. The trust is way up. I suspect that if Barbarossa had known what this contract would really entail, they'd probably have refused it.
But they took the job, and now it looks like only one ship can survive -- unless something strange happens. It's obvious that Marika doesn't want to destroy Barbarossa, and obviously doesn't want Bentenmaru destroyed in turn. How will she cope with the situation?
Can Courier take over Barbarossa's computers? Winning a hacking battle would be the best way to defuse the situation, but presumably Barbarossa's crew are very experience in EW.
From the next-ep teaser, next episode Bentenmaru will be under fire.
They changed the ED. Most of the images are from preceding episodes, but the last few are from a battle we haven't yet seen. Is it the one in the next episode?

Thinking back to that conversation, I don't know if Chiaki ever said they TOOK the job. She said they got a contract, but she never said they signed it.

You might be right. I'll have to look at it again.

Strictly speaking, it isn't Bentenmaru's business why Gruelle wants that ship. She's hired them to find it for her, and that's really all they need to know.
Another thing they haven't asked her is just what the heck is going on back in the Serenity system. And likewise, because it isn't really any of their business.
Given that the contract offered to Barbarossa included a "Kill anyone that gets in your way" clause, it's possible they refused the job. It seems as if these pirates are trying to stay clean. (Indeed, it may be required by their Letter of Marque.) They will kill in self defense, but only if necessary. I bet they refuse to kill any other time. They're pirates but they are not assassins.
There may come a time when Marika sits down with Gruelle and says, "Look, we need to understand better what the hell is going on so we can make better plans and cope better with what's facing us," and then we might get a briefing. But until it actually and directly affects the mission, asking those kinds of questions would be out-of-bounds.

Chiaki said that the contract reached them by obscure means, and they didn't know who it was they would have been working for. That stinks to high heaven and may have set off alarm bells.
Tellu541, I think you might be right that they refused it.

Which imply that yes, they took the job.

(My impression is that most of the opening narrations have been about things that we more or less knew already, but that may well be inaccurate; I haven't gone back to audit them.)
