And so, battle is joined. And it was awesome. And Marika was superb. Just wonderful.
I watched it on Crunchyroll, at 1080p, and it looked great. My download link is fast, and their server is fast, and I didn't have any stuttering or pauses.
By request, the rest is below the fold, because of mild spoilers.
Last time we speculated that this was a setup, a teaching exercise. Doesn't look like that was the case; looks like it was a real attempt at a hijacking. We didn't find out who it was, but presumably we will.
By the way, "Barbalusa" == "Barbarossa". Just thought I'd mention that.
What this episode showed us is that Marika really is qualified to be captain of the Bentenmaru, and not just through family lineage. She is smart, and brave, and clever, and decisive. She reminds me a bit of another Sato character, Yurika from Martian Successor Nadesico. Obviously there are a lot of differences between them, but Marika seems to have the same kind of tactical genius that Yurika did.
The attack Marika made on the enemy was exactly the kind of genius Yurika displayed.
The series intro is complete. Marika has decided she will become a pirate. It's obvious that the crew of the Bentenmaru will accept her. And she has a powerful ally. That reveal wasn't entirely unexpected, but it's nice that it's out in the open.
Still plenty of story to be told here, of course.
By the way, Jenny has class. Her message to the attackers was perfect. (Reminds me of General Tony McAuliffe.)

A really fun episode. And the design of that military ship at the end was something else. I wonder if they had to get permission for it from the Bowie family.
The feed from Crunchyroll has always been pretty good. The only time I ever had any serious problems with it was the first night they streamed the final episode of Strike Witches 2. That was torture!

This episode also answered a question of mine. I didn't see how the few dishes we saw on the Odette II could possibly "sail" the ship. But it seems, based on what we saw in this episode, that there are actually a lot more reflectors that don't exist physically -- the dishes we see are actually creating an electronic "sail field" behind the ship that catches--or reflects--photons.. Without something of that size, there's no way the light pressure would be high enough to move the Odette. Contemporary fiction usually postulates sails with an area in the thousands of square kilometers to move a ship about our solar system..
Pretty damn cool, and I think, worth the wait, to see a scientifically accurate battle. (Within the limits of physics as we know it anyway.)

I can poke holes in it. But I don't want to. The Rule of Cool excuses the few small mistakes.
They're not running a physics symposium here, they're telling a story. It's nice when the story cleaves to physics as we know it as closely as this, but it isn't really necessary.

On the other hand, "Fool!" isn't a strong enough translation of bakame. That's pretty strong language for a young lady, which is why Marika was a bit shocked.
It's more like "Damned fool" or "You stupid son of a bitch".
