Mouretsu Pirates -- ep 15

I think this was the best episode yet. And it was laugh-out-loud funny in many places. Plus the best bonus of all: Chiaki is beginning to smile, and not just for choco-parfait.

So Marika's plan is to take the yacht club on a cruise on Odette II, and once they're out in space, they all transfer over to Bentenmaru, for the real practice cruise.

Chiaki helps Gruier and Grunhilde stow away on Odette II, so they're along for the ride.

Seems that Misa left a bug on board, so the bridge crew is monitoring all this. And they royally freak out. Nothing on Bentenmaru is standard; it's the result of 100 years of hacks, replacements, and custom tuning.

Misa tells them that they're going to be held for an extra two weeks, and they realize that this means the Letter of Marque could expire. It's obvious that Marika intends to use the Yacht Club as a crew for one pirate raid, to prevent that.

But the girls know nothing of its systems. So the bridge crew buckle down and write "Operating the Bentenmaru for Beginners" in blitz time. And Misa sends it to Shou, at the insurance company, who calls Marika and tells her he found it in his files.

Using that, the girls come up to speed pretty fast. Then they make an FTL jump, which the bridge crew forgot to include in the manual.

I must say: Lyn really should be a pirate. Marika ought to recruit Lyn for the Bentenmaru crew after Lyn graduates. If Marika doesn't, Kenjo should recruit her for the Barbarossa.

Shou is hilarious every time he appears. He is on Marika's side, of course. Bentenmaru is a client of his, and he gets a lot of profitable business out of Bentenmaru and doesn't want to lose that. So he definitely wants this mission to come off, so that the Letter of Marque doesn't expire. And when Marika thinks she's ready to go, he'll have a job ready for her, even if he has to bump someone else off of one.

But the best thing of all was Chiaki. At the end, she's smiling. She looks like she's enjoying herself.

Next episode they're going to make a raid. And it'll be the Princess Apricot again.

It's going to be interesting

The visual of the Odette II's sails unfurling was pretty awesome.

3 I think the people who are making this show must be readers of Chizumatic.  In this episode they finally addressed Steven's question of how people get to the lower bridge deck - they even showed it more than once, just to make sure that he noticed it...

4 I didn't notice it. WhyNot's fansub hasn't come out yet, so I haven't rewatched since yesterday morning.

And, oh, is it ever going to hit the news.

Maybe not the way you're thinking.

My line of concern was that

12 I think the answer to most of this is the Rule of Funny. This is a comedy arc.

13 My interpretation of the whole thing was that there isn't any concern on the girls part about keeping their actions secret long-term, it's just that they wouldn't be able to get on the Bentenmaru conventionally.  It's being held in an isolation area, presumably out of range of any transport that the girls could get access to, other than the Odette II.  Perhaps they could have asked for permission and made arrangements to do it somewhat conventionally, but when have we seen any of these characters operate that way?  It probably never crossed their minds.  They'll probably make no attempt to hide their identities or prevent recordings of the pirate action, the whole thing is far too exciting and cool to try and keep secret.

14 Yes, I think Rule of Funny is probably the best explanation.  It doesn't appear this show is quite the tightly scripted work I was initially thinking.  Which is disappointing only in that I REALLY like disecting those kind of shows, and they're few and far between.  That doesn't make this any less a GREAT show...just different.  Adjusting expectations accordingly.
