Mouretsu Pirates -- ep 13

This episode was mainly plot exposition and situational setup. Some pretty serious changes in the status quo. And next episode they're going to start the third book. Which should be a blast.

UPDATE: Chiaki-chan has become a running gag in the series. Think that Marika-sama will become another one?

At the end of ep 12, Marika and the Bentenmaru slipped away from Serenity and headed home. But Gruier wouldn't accept that. They were called back, and there was a public ceremony where Gruier awarded a medal to Marika, with her entire bridge crew present. (Perhaps they all got medals, too.)

It was all over the news, especially back at Sea of the Morningstar, and now Marika is famous. It's good publicity for Bentenmaru, so that's a plus, but it means she's notorious now. At the school, everyone knows about her, and she's being called Marika-sama. That showed up in the series teaser, and I wondered when it would happen.

We got some backstory about Serenity. Seems the place was on the edge of civil war. Gruier and Grunhilde were both being manipulated by various factions, and it wasn't looking good. But bringing the Golden Ghost Ship into the Serenity system, as well as the fact that the Rose Spring can no longer create members of the royal family, plus a few other things, means that the situation is healing. The factions are coming together, and civil war has been averted. Gruier gives full credit to Marika for that, because apparently it was Marika's idea to take the Golden Ghost ship back to Serenity. And, of course, it was members of Marika's crew which made it possible.

Gruier and Grunhilde are both attending Hakuoh Academy now. Getting them both out of the Serenity system for a while is probably a good thing, in any case, and it'll be good for them both to grow up somewhere else. Plus, there's been some bad blood between them. Being together on a different planet will allow them to heal their relationship.

It's a new year at school. Marika is now second year. Jenny has graduated, and Lynn is now president of the yacht club.

Misa and Kane are no longer at the school. Ririka has quit her job at the port, and it looks like she wants to go back into space. I wonder if she'll end up working on the Barbarossa? (Wouldn't that be cool?)

Lessee; we got an answer to how Gruier got into Bentenmaru, and I was wrong about it being a psychic power. Gruier also commented on something I had suspected: Ririka's house has much better security than average.

And at the end, their next job came down the pike. It's an under-the-table delivery, which doesn't require the Letter of Marque. Marika wants to take Gruier and Grunhilde to the zoo, and will miss the trip. But she's the only member of the crew who won't be going.

And that is how the third book begins. I'm really looking forward to it.

I can't see that story taking the entire rest of the series. It seems like it could be told in two or three episodes, or they might even stretch it out to six. But 13 eps? that's just too long! It'll drag.

About Ririka, my money's on her

But what I'm afraid of is

Regardless, I'm not expecting any development in this regard for quite a while. At least not until book 3 is done.

8 Jeeze, I love series that make ya think this much, especially when the show ends up being worthy of all the speculation, as I'm pretty sure this one will.  (Counter-example:  Gosick.  Starting out seeming deep and complex, ended up -- not so much.)

9 Yeah, I gave Gosick my "Worst of 2011" award just because of that.  Although I still wonder if I should have given it to Rio: Rainbow Gate.  Kind of hard to give it to a show that made my brain do a belly-flop after half an episode.

What worries me is that we're building castles in the air for this show; it may still disappoint us yet.

Rio wasn't pretentious, the way Gosick was.

...but let's not derail this thread, shall we?

11 I foresee Grunhilde getting a cutesy nickname in the future, inside the Yacht Club.  That could be great.

No, I don't think they'll do that. They've been teasing Chiaki, but that's because they're trying to get her to loosen up. The princesses are a different matter; they're entitled to be just a bit stuffy, after all, and indeed they're being surprisingly accessible, such as being addressed by name without any honorific at all.

Also, it wouldn't really be fair to pick on her. Most of the girls there are 5-7 years older than she is.

I don't even expect any -chan for her.

Grunhilde was a little bit withdrawn on her first meeting with the group, but I fully expect her to lighten up later, and I think the older girls will fully appreciate that and not hassle her.

13 Considering that almost everyone in the club seems to be a cut-up to one degree or another, at some point they might start giving her a little ribbing -- of the gentle kind -- just to make her feel included.
