I'm one of the people who signed this, and I received that email in response yesterday. I was a bit surprised when I saw it in my email; I though maybe some foul person had signed me up for Obama's propaganda mailing list. Then I read it (skipping most of the propaganda) and found the original petition at the bottom, which I did remember.
The response is totally tone-deaf. It's blatantly obvious that the people who signed it are against gun control, yet the response talks up gun control measures.
On the other hand, what else could they say? Directly responding to the petition would force them to admit that declaring someplace a "Gun Free" zone won't prevent bad guys from taking guns there. It just means they won't encounter any good guys with guns, making the bad guys' job easier.
UPDATE: "And let's be clear: President Obama believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms."
Oh, sure. I believe that. He wouldn't lie to us.

The email came from info@messages.whitehouse.gov and it would have been illegal to ask for contributions.

When did the letter of the law stop the Obama Administration from doing what they wanted?
Also, Obama might be telling the truth - he does believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms...By individual Libyans and Syrians.
(In the interest of full disclosure - I approved the toppling of Khaddafi or Qadaffi or Gaddafi, which was an act that was long past due. But I despised how Obama handled everything else related to that - and I was under no illusions on what would happen, unlike chief executives and chief executive-aspirants.)

In return for his admittedly forced cooperation our government arranged his deposing and brutal execution; we can imagine how enthusiastic others will be to cooperate with us in the future. Ditto for tossing Mubarak aside so quickly, which is playing out so well right now. Granted, after Mubarak avoiding famine has been a question of "Is the military willing and able to kill enough members of the Muslim Brotherhood?", but it's hardly clear going through all this mess was needed in the first place.
