Well, one thing you can say about this series is that it isn't stuck in a rut.
A few patterns are beginning to develop, however. These aren't ruts so much as they're running gags.
Usually there will be some sort of new form or image of Eineus, but that didn't happen in ep 5. The best fan service images will be a fakeout involving Takuto. Usually an episode will fall into some sort of genre. It isn't quite as rigid about that as Excel Saga was, though. There will always be a huge amount of destruction. Tanarotte will kick ass. Sakuma will chew the scenery. Eineus will beat up Sakuma. Something strange will happen to Portal Izumo. And at least twice now Sagami showed up at the end, as the voice of reason.
They don't use every one of those in every single episode, but they usually use most of them.
The problem with farce is that it can be hit or miss, and that's how it is in this show. This episode didn't really absorb me like ep 3, but I think it was more fun than ep 4, which I've had no urge at all to rewatch.
The farcical setup in this case was this week's guest character, and if we're lucky he won't show up again in the series. (Man, talk about politically incorrect!) The good side was that this meant the farce in this episode was particularly farcical. The bad side was that for me at least the humor this time was more miss than hit.
But it's not as bad as ep 5 of Strike Witches. So let's count our blessings.
