Lull week

The problem with having 12 episodes in a 1-cour series is that... a cour is actually 13 weeks long. So right now all the series I've been watching are over, but the new ones don't start until next week. (And what do the Japanese TV stations broadcast this week? Documentaries about tour boats on the Rhine river?)

The 17th episode of Marie and Gali finally came by. Looks like Wasurenai has picked the project back up again. The problem with that series is that the episodes are only 5 minutes long, so watching one ep in isolation is a rather small bite to eat.

DBKai 74 just came out. Wakamoto Norio sure is doing the voice of the first version of Cell a lot differently this time. In about three more episodes Cell is going to transition to his intermediate form, and I'm looking forward to how he sounds then.

1 Enh, I'm handling it by mainlining Linebarrels of Iron on Crunchy, and updating my website.

2 I'm catching up on shows I've always wanted to see, like Black Lagoon.  I'm also trying to give Full Metal Panic another chance... it's not working, but I'm trying.

3 The middle of FMP is a hard slog, as there's not much Kanamé in it, and its really her (or at least the interaction between her and Souské) that makes the show work.  Of course, then there's the last episode, with a thirty-second countdown that takes something like FIVE minutes of screen time.   But the first arc is great, and I've re-watched it several times.

It's a lot like To Aru Kagaku no Index in that it's more like an anthology than it is a single story. Like Index, it's a series of independent stories based on several books of the light novel series. and like Index, they're really uneven. The story about Afghanistan is not a fun time.

But let's not talk about that any more. Wonderduck is the one (trying to) watch it, so a post on his site?

Some of 'em still do 13 eps, but it's increasingly common for it to be 12.

It makes sense economically. The big win for the studios is disc sales, and usually it's two eps per disc. If they do 12 eps, or if they do 13 (and do one 3-ep disc), they still sell 6 discs so their income from that is the same. (They don't price 3-ep discs higher, or not very much so.)

It turns out they lose money on broadcast, so 13 eps costs them more there. And of course it's one more ep of production cost.
