1 I think #1 was a key point intended by George Lucas from the start. It seems to obvious to miss in the first movie. Then he added human slaves in the prequels. (Oddly, none of the characters seemed particularly disturbed by either sort of slavery.)

2 The original Star Munchkin was published in 2002. The new Star Munchkin is a Guest Artist Edition with new art to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Munchkin.

I've not ever actually seen The Hidden Fortress, but apparently the droids look an awful lot like a pair of peasants from that movie.  Which would imply that droids aren't *quite* slaves, but are not all that far off from it, culturally.

Which doesn't change SBD's point.  I've seen some downright disturbing arguments about the matter.  Most of them boiled down to "I like rooting for the heroes.  I don't believe you can be a hero if you support slavery.  So droids are not slavery, because [Insert every single ante-bellum slavery justification argument, virtually verbatim]."

5 It really is a shame that R2-D2, an otherwise excellent droid, suffers from incurable drapetomania.

6 After I saw the first prequel film, although Jar-Jar annoyed the hell out of me and the directing was terrible as demonstrated by the awful performances, I was excited by the plot of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side. It was so clear!

The Old Republic clearly tolerated chattel slavery of living beings, while the Empire apparently did not. Anakin was born a slave and I suspected his mother would die as one. He would be lured to overthrow the Republic as a crusade to end slavery and bring a more just order to the galaxy. It would all fall apart of course because the anti-slavery angle was just the future Emperor using him, and that would be the grand tragedy- he would succeed in ending literal slavery, but at the cost of stamping out most other forms of freedom for everyone.

Sadly, I was overestimating Lucas's plotting abilities. Instead Anakin overthrew the Old Republic because of a not-very-convincing romance. Whatever.
