Hooray for Media Blasters

Mike O'Toole laments all the strange shit that Media Blasters has released over the years. And yeah, they've released a whole lot of utter shit, no doubt about that.

But they also gave us Grenadier. And they gave us Kirameki Project. Who else would have licensed either of those, back in the day? Not to mention Another Lady Innocent, probably the highest quality hentai title ever made. Plus they brought us Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians and Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny.

Of course, I have to admit that they also gave us Aoi & Mutsuki, and Dokuro-chan, and Amaenaide yo and Ah My Buddha. And Girls High.

And Eiken. So yeah, they have blood on their hands. I've never said otherwise. But it wasn't all bad. Just mostly. And there were some diamonds floating in the muck.

So now they're giving us Rio Rainbow Gate. And when it comes out I'll buy the BDs. Probably never watch them, but I'll buy them. And if Media Blasters hadn't been in the industry, I'd have missed out on those few diamonds.

UPDATE: Grenadier had the best pistol-reload of all time, and that alone is enough to merit our gratitude!

UPDATE: Pete comments.

I probably ought to point out that Media Blasters released two years worth of Ah! My Goddess! and they were really beautiful releases. I didn't make it through the second season, but that wasn't MB's fault.

1 It's not that hard to defend Grenadier, as it was a pretty decent series.  It was what it was, but it was good at it.  And it was at least interesting.  Something not well said for most series.

And, on the topic of Rio, I was actually surprised it wasn't licensed.  Having watched parts of it lately, the truth is it's actually a better series than about 1/2 of them running right now.  And THAT isn't a vote of confidence on the current season.

2 Grenadier was also one of the rare series that ran out of source material almost immediately, and still managed a coherent, satisfying ending.

3 Mr O'Toole seems to be living proof that some people can't spell their last name correctly.

Media Blasters released the first season of the AMG TV series.  ADV released the second.
