Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun -- ep 1

When you're talking about outright fan service shows in the last couple of years, this one rates right up there as one of the best, as I understand it. So there it was, minding its own business on Box Torrents, and so I grabbed a copy. Especially since it's based on a DVD rip.

Just to get the important stuff out of the way up front, I rate Mayu as 0.9 Rushunas.

Now that we've gotten past that, I just finished ep 1, and while it's really stupid, it's not quite as stupid as I thought it would be. For one thing, I find myself really liking Shungo. I particularly like his voice. This is the first show I've seen with this seiyuu, and his voice is pleasant and fits the kind of character Shungo seems to be very well.

Mayu's voice surprised me. It's Kadowaki Mai, who is probably my favorite second-tier seiyuu right now mainly because she did the voice of Kana in Kirameki Project. And she wears glasses, which is good for ten points. But she's done a lot of other roles I know: Hakase (the mad scientist) in Negime!?, Hikaru (one of the loli mikos) in MoonPhase, Marron (one of the triplets) in Hanaukyo Maid Team La Verite, Meah (the maid) in Popotan, Sanya in Strike Witches, and Fam in UFO Princess Valkyrie 3.

She also had a big part in Fate/stay Night (Illya) but I didn't get far enough in that. And in Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny she did the voice of Koumei Shokatsuryou, the loli that hangs around with Ryubi.

She's been doing a lot of dues-paying, pretty much. She's got the talent for bigger things, I think, and maybe she'll start getting breaks. In the mean time, I know her best from Princess Kana, and Mayu is a lot different kind of part than that one. Fact is, I wouldn't have put the two together if I hadn't looked it up.

The most annoying character in the show so far is Mayu's older brother, who sounds gay but presumably isn't. Actually, what he reminds me of is Jinnai in El Hazard, and I monumentally despised that character.

Shungo's older sister Ryoko is eccentric to the point of disbelief. But then, nearly the whole setup of this series is strange to the point of disbelief. Serious story telling this ain't.

However, Shungo is the guy at the core of it, and since I like him, and since the girls are cute as hell, I'll forgive quite a lot. At least for the moment.

2 Just don't expect it to make sense. (There's actually a tiny bit of a plot here, that was invented strictly for the anime; it didn't come from the manga.)

There's at least one point late in the show, I thought Shungo should just strangle his sister and be done with it.  Of course, the fact that she can kick his butt without working up much of a sweat might have figured into his decision not to.

The OP and ED are catchy, too.  If they uncensored them, post frame grabs! Er, if you feel up to it.  I've been kind of hoping this one makes it across the lake in full DVD glory though.
