1 He truly is a magic man!

2 Harry Turtledove takes on Lord of the Rings....

(hopefully that's not TOO obscure of a reference)

3 What's up with that hand behind his hat?

4 I think that's a broken tree branch.

5 Looks like his staff, actually.  If you look closely you can see something running down below it to the right at about a 20 degree angle.  It runs between his robe and his arm, directly behind the end of the magazine, and is a different texture from the robe itself.

6 Mauser, not at all.  Its the Guns of the West or something.

Posted by: RickC at October 04, 2013 03:00 PM (swpgw)

7 Guns of the Shire, where hobbits armed with AK-47s take over Middle Earth.  Dragons are no match for halflings and ZSU-23-4s.  You don't want to know what happened to the elf bowmen when the furfoots figured out how to work the 155mm howitzers...

8 Guns of the Shire?  Wasn't increasing the Hobbit industrial base what Sarumon was working on at the end of the trilogy?  If only those four "heroes" had let him finish upgrading their infrastructure...

9 Such inversion is not the new thinking, made especially appealing by JRRT being a raving luddite. Howeveer, there should be limits, among respectable people anyhow. I once bought an "Orc PoV" book by one Mary Gentle, which developed the idea much further in its natural direction. Suffice it to say that it is the only book I ever destroyed on purpose for its content.

Hold it!  Them there's fightin' words, mister.  I actually quite enjoyed Grunts!, and read it every now and again.   It's better than Pete makes it sound: it's 100% satire from start to finish, there's nothing serious about it ever

Any of you ever read Doomfarers of Coramonde?

At one point the bad guys use a summoning spell to bring in a dragon. The good guys use a summoning spell to bring in a M113 APC which was in Viet Nam at the time, to counter the dragon.

12 Never read Doomfarers, but I watched some of Zero no Tsukaima.

13 Not to mention "Those who hunt Elves".

14 I agree. Please don't mention Those Who Hunt Elves.

15 Speaking of Orc PoV, the Monster Hunter International books are pretty good and have a couple of nice trope inversions.

16 Crap.  That came across sounding like a recommendation, which it wasn't intended to be.

17 I think this is enough topic drift.
