George Lucas rolling in his grave...

...and he isn't even dead yet.

They're going to do a "Boba Fett" origin movie. Which is nuts; we already know where he came from, and we've seen him die.

The beloved character was primarily played by English actor Jeremy Bulloch in "The Empire Strikes Back” and "Return of the Jedi.”

"Beloved"? He's a villain, a dirty rotten scoundrel!

When they chose Jango Fett as the genetic source for all the clone storm troopers, part of his price was that they give him one to raise as his son, which he names Boba.

What kind of story can they tell about that?

I suppose they think they can pull this off. After all, the first sequel trilogy (eps 1-3) were about Darth Vader, but we'd already seen Darth Vader do a heel-face-turn just before he died heroically. But Boba Fett's death was a laugh-line. (The desert monster burped just after swallowing him.)

I guess all Lucas can do these days to comfort himself is count all his money...

1 I think a lot of Fett's fame came from my generation; the younger boys who were in the sweet spot of marketing.  I honestly can't remember where the story about Boba Fett being the last Mandalorian Knight started, but it was pre-existing when Lucas finally okay'd the expanded universe in the 90's.  Back when being a Jedi Knight was supposed to be a really rare thing, and lightsabers were one-hit-one-kill against everything but another Jedi, the idea of a group of bounty hunters (not a race, at that point) electing to go toe-to-toe with Jedi Knights using "conventional" weapons and armor was pretty bad ass.

Given the unholy things that George Lucas has done with Star Wars, doing something that runs counter to what he did or would have does not bother me in the least.

And considering that now-jettisoned Expanded Universe has Fett surviving and living for quite a while, I doubt Lucas would care all that much.

I doubt Lucas cares much one way or another. His child has grown up, moved out into the world, and become a pimp.

And I suppose you can hand-wave: Fett didn't actually die; someone could have rescued him from that hole in the ground.

5 The Expanded Universe is no longer canon, but in that storyline, Boba Fett decided that he didn't really feel like letting the Sarlak devour his essence for 1,000 years of pain and suffering, and basically turned the tables, emerging more powerful than he went in.

6 I have mixed feelings.  On one hand, I understand the appeal.  Yes, all Boba Fett really had was a look, but it was a pretty nice look.  On the other hand, yeah, he died like a punk on ROTJ.  On the third hand, his treatment in the EU was by and large nauseating.

That said, if the new Star Wars movie proves good, and the first spinoff proves good?  I'm willing to extend Disney some good faith, and figure they'll do *something* worthwhile with Boba Fett.

8 The child Boba Fett appeared in a three part arc in season 2 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, where he infiltrated the cadets to assassinate Mace Windu. He reappeared in season 4 as the pre-teen leader of a group of bounty hunters. They were pretty good and might be the basis for the movie. I think Clone Wars is still canonical.
