So the real story is beginning to appear. Spoilers below the fold.
UPDATE: ep 8.
UPDATE: ep 9.
UPDATE: ep 11.
Seems there's a power called "Star Reading", a kind of scrying. It can be used to see places far away, or to look at other alternate realities, and can also look at the future.
Leo seems to be particularly good at it. And what she's seeing in the future is that both Milhiore and Shinku will die. She's been trying to perturb events to prevent that. But it seems to be worse. Before, she only saw Milhiore dead. Now it's both of them.
Ep 6 was pretty much all plot exposition, but it was handled nicely. And this lady,
Yukikaze, is also easy on the eyes. Ep 6 is the first new one, and I'm starting to collect frame grabs again. Unfortunately, a lot of the best scenes are at night, and night shots don't work very well for the top rotation.
UPDATE: So a new war starts, and we begin to fight it in ep 8.
Ricotta is the coolest character in the show, without a doubt. Her artillery barrage in ep 3 was wonderful, and she seems to have a lot of interesting tricks up her sleeve.
In Ep 9 maybe we'll get a character confrontation, one they've been hinting at for a long time.
UPDATE: And ep 9 ends in a cliffhanger.
There are several ways to handle time travel stories, including stories which involve precognition. One of the best ways, which was used here, is that the person with knowledge of the future, and the will to change it, eventually learns that their every effort actually brings about the future they sought to change.
If Leo hadn't started this war, we wouldn't be in this fix.
UPDATE: And so that plot arc ends with ep 11.
Only thing now is to figure out a way for Shinku to go home again, and Ricotta isn't looking very happy. Whether it's because she doesn't want him to leave, or because she doesn't think he can, remains to be seen.
I already know that he makes it home again, though. I cheated and snuck a peak at someone else's post about the last episode.

I guess I can see the link to Zero no Tsukaima, but it's only a mild similarity. I don't really see any relation to Mave-chan, though.
