Geneon: Last Chance

I just went through the list of Geneon titles in R1, which are basically in close-out now, to see if there was anything on the list I felt I needed to get before the supply dried up. I didn't find anything. But just as a public service, I thought I'd list the titles I've seen from Geneon along with my opinion.

Recommended:
Ah! My Goddess: The Movie
Card Captor Sakura (all titles)
Haibane Renmei!!!
Hanaukyo Maid Team: La Verite
Serial Experiments Lain
Someday's Dreamers
Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy (TV & summer special)
Vandread and Vandread: The Second Stage

Maybe, for some people:
Ai Yori Aoshi
Battle Athletes OVA
Bottle Fairy
El Hazard - The Magnificent World (OVA)
Hand Maid May
Kamichu
Popotan
Shakugan no Shana
Strawberry Marshmallow
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
The Adventures of Mini-Goddess

Not Recommended:
Battle Athletes Victory
Chobits
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue
El Hazard (anything except the first OVA)
Gate Keepers
Girls Bravo
Ikki Tousen
Mahoromatic
R.O.D The TV
Sakura Wars: The Movie
Sol Bianca: The Legacy
Tenjho Tenge
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World

Even on the "recommended" list, not ever title is appropriate for every viewer. Serial Experiments Lain for instance is very unusual.

Unfortunately, Geneon's license for the Card Captor Sakura franchise expired a year ago, so the two boxed sets may no longer be available. (Bob doesn't have them.)

There's really only one must-have on this list: Haibane Renmei. It is the single best anime series I have ever seen.

I agree with you about ROD the TV, but if you see the ROD OVA cheap you might want to give it a try.  (Not trying to give you the "hard sell", I know you and I have differing tastes.)

Everyone I've shown it to has liked it, and I think it avoids many of the flaws you cited about the later TV series.  In particular, the protagonist actually develops through the course of the story, and ends up strong and confident.

Regarding Cardcaptor Sakura, Discount Anime DVD lists this bundle as "in stock", but my order from a week ago is still listed as back-ordered.  They've come through on other hard-to-find titles for me in the past, so it might be worth a try...

2 Sorry, I know all about the ROD OVA, and it's just too stupid for me. Not a chance. (It's on my "future series" list with a definite "no".)

3 Noir is not a Geneon title. ;p

4 Rats. The listing included several where Geneon licensed the sound track. I thought I'd weeded out all of those, but I missed that one. I've deleted it.

Nothing I want that I haven't already got.  I'm interested in Shakugan no Shana, but not at $30 a disk.

Ah well.

6 Very sobering.

I've watched many of these via Netflix. Most I never need to see again--but there are a few I occasionally want to re-watch.

Already, I've encountered one or two series that are missing a disc--but if the distributer closes, those discs cannot be replaced.

(Yes, absolutely I own Haibane Renmei. Maybe I should get a spare copy, for loan-outs and hub damage.)

For similar reasons, I recently purchased a used VHS tape of The Lighthorsemen, which I only want to watch once every three or four years, but which was never transferred to DVD and is thus in danger of dying out, and certainly cannot be rented through most venues.

7 Drat. I wasn't supposed to buy any more animé for a couple of months, but everyone that has seen it, thinks Haibane is one of the greats, even if it isn't to their taste. I didn't realize it was a Geneon title.

So, I broke the budget, and tossed in Witchblade #3 to be eligible for super-saver shipping from RACS. But I held the line there.

Of course, given my recent track record, maybe Robert isn't going to be thrilled with my support.

8 I look forward to your reaction to Haibane Renmei.

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World is also not a Geneon, it's from ADV.

(Sorry.)
