Game Dev Tycoon

Yesterday a new game called Game Dev Tycoon became available. The developers (a two-man garage shop) also released a pirated version of the game onto the torrents, which had a change: if you play the pirated version, you can't make any profit because of all the people who steal your game.

And now the irony of ironies: gamers are flooding discussion sites, asking how they can implement DRM for their pseudo-games to prevent the piracy that's stealing all their revenue inside the real game.

The real game they themselves stole, depriving the real authors of revenue...

1 This only demonstrates that any fake world can be implemented inside a simulated environment of a game. Either the one where DRM is a precondition of received revenue from a game and not a way to abuse your legitimate customers, or the one where guns are sentients instruments of terror that kill people - it's all equally valid in a simulation.

2 It's great marketing - except for the fact that their site has pretty much crashed under the load so no-one can get there to buy the game anyway.

I want to see if it has more depth than Kairosoft's Game Dev Story (which is a pretty obvious inspiration).  I have all of Kairosoft's games (that are available in English/on Android, anyway, they have approximately a squillion of these games in Japan) and love them to bits, but Game Dev Story was their first game and is a bit simplistic.

3 If you, the game developer, release the game onto the torrents, then nobody stole your game! You gave it to them. It's not a "cracked" copy, it's a crippleware demo.

4 Avatar, it's still clever as hell IMHO.
