Frieza!

Sometimes it seems as if it takes forever for UPS to come. Today they didn't show up until after 4. So I now have the third "season" of DBZ, which covers the rest of the Frieza saga, plus Garlic Junior, and the appearance of Mirai no Trunks.

I'm watching it in English the first time through. Vegeta's voice seems different. I think this was among the very first part that Funimation dubbed, and Chris Sabat hadn't really worked out what he wanted Vegeta to sound like.

It's been years since I've watched the final fight against Frieza, and my memory was vague. Where I am right now, Goku is in Frieza's ship in the healing unit, Piccolo is flying towards the battle as fast as he can and will probably show up there Real Soon Now, and in the mean time Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, and Dende are trying to fight and survive as best they can.

I didn't realize that Krillin did as well as he did against Frieza. After his first kienzan took Frieza's tail off, it's hardly surprising that Frieza took the later ones seriously. That's Krillin's best attack, and if it could take Frieza's tail off, it could cut him in half. Which was certainly what Krillin hoped for.

It's not an attack Krillin likes to use, however, because it's a killing attack. But in this case he's certainly willing. Frieza dying would have been the ideal outcome. Too bad Frieza was able to partially dodge the first one (losing only his tail) and dodge all the others Krillin tossed at him.

Krillin managed to keep Frieza busy long enough for Dende to heal Gohan. Who is now stronger, that being the way of Saiyajins. Any time they get the crap beat out of them and recover, their strength goes up.

I must say I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would. Frieza isn't as good a villain as Cell is, but it's better than I had remembered it being. And I know that it's going to really be good once Piccolo shows up.

Sorry, folks, I know it's crap. But it's my kind of crap. DBZ was my gateway drug, and I've always liked it.

UPDATE: They were never real big on worrying about continuity in this series, but Frieza's tail is one of the worst examples of that. When he was in his third (I think it was) form, Krillin took it off with a kienzan. When he reached his final form, about a thousand episodes ago, his tail seemed to be fine.

Now Goku has converted to a super-saiyajin, and suddenly the end of Frieza's tail is gone again.

UPDATE: They changed the episode numbering. My copy of the Trunks Saga has episode 107 as the one where Trunks talks to Goku and then returns to the future. But on this collection, ep 107 is where the Earth's dragon balls are used to wish Chaozu, Tenshinhan, and Yamucha back to life, which is maybe 25 episodes earlier.

Hah.  That doesn't work in the real world, of course.

...as my son found out when he was about four.  He head-butted a rocking chair, right on a solid-wood part of the backrest, and bounced back, had that stunned deer-in-the-headlights look for a couple seconds, then started crying when he realized it actually hurt.

I asked him why the heck he did that, and he said "to gain strength."  I couldn't help myself.  I burst out laughing.  And then I said he wasn't allowed to watch DBZ any more.

Thank God he didn't try to emulate Bugs Bunny with a frying pan...

2 Frying pan?  Bah. Use a wrench, like I did.  Still don't understand why my brother didn't see stars.....

"If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a tackler.  [pause] The same principle holds for firearms."
