Fractale -- ep 4

Seems like every other series has driven me away this season, but Fractale continues to impress. Ep 4 continues the story telling, and quite frankly I don't have the slightest idea where this story is going.

They certainly are doing their damndest to tell a new story, one that isn't derivative. I mean, you can point to small things (e.g. The Matrix) but not to anything huge. And the characters are complex; no one is a one-trick pony.

Enri is a good example. She's the little blonde girl who was chasing Phryne in the first episode. She's turning out to be one of the more admirable and interesting characters in the series. She's got guts and brains, and she cares about things more than she lets on.

For most of this episode Clain was in "A plague on all your houses" mode, and with pretty good reason. Based on what we've been seeing so far, there don't seem to be any "good guys". Clain seems to have a choice of bad guys, and fate seems to have tossed him into one of the camps. Whether he will eventually buy in to their program remains to be seen.

Actually, I can detect a strong strain of another series I've seen: The Third. Obviously it's not identical, but there are significant similarities. But I don't think it's remotely the same story, and I'm finding Fractale to be quite fascinating.

1 Regarding comparison to The Third, I can sort of see that comparison, in that there's a feel of something not quite right -- that is, there's an underlying assumption to the order of the world that's expressed in what we see.  When it is revealed to us, it may completely change how we see one side or the other.

The story-telling here is a whole lot tighter than in The Third though.
