Pete sez:
I never stop wondering just how Steven finds all the weird old anime he watches.
You know how I've been finding a lot of the weird, obscure stuff I've been watching recently? By watching the trailers on the Media Blasters disks I already own. I don't watch anyone else's ads, but the Media Blaster ads are full of gold nuggets of the obscure and strange -- or at least nuggets of pyrite. And, of course, available in R1, usually at excellent prices. (Unless they've gone out of print. Alas, Elf Princess Rane!)
For example: I learned about Mouse from a trailer on Grenadier. Mouse, in turn, had trailers for Jungle de Ikou and Demon Fighter Kocho, both of which were in my most recent order. And I'm pretty sure I got onto Grenadier from something else, but I no longer remember.
I've watched Demon Fighter Kocho but haven't written about it yet; I need to do that. It's really, really bad! Just absolutely marvelously bad.
And Jungle de Ikou has an ad for something called Voogie's Angels which I'm seriously considering. Voogie is voiced by Hisakawa Aya, and Mitsuishi Kotono is in it, too. For $9, what can go wrong? The name alone...
There's a reason why Media Blasters is a sentimental favorite around here.

If you want a decent Obari anime I recommend something out of the Fatal Fury series. That one is two OVAs and a movie and it's all pretty fun stuff (and you don't need the OVAs to enjoy the movie which is good cause I think the OVAs are out of print). If you like lots of great action, this series has it. Story is...service-able. Massive drinking is recommended. A shot for every cliche. There's also Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer which is even cornier and more over the top (though they eventually took the two part OVA and edited it into a movie and somehow sucked out the guilty pleasure aspect of the whole thing and replaced it with massive fail). This series would also be the point where Obari's character designs still (mostly) resemble human beings and not people crossed with those little aliens from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Recommend two shots for every cliche (though I take no responsibility for alcohol poisoning).
But I don't know if you're familiar with Obari at all and nine bucks is better then what I paid. If you like it, I would suggest the above. If you don't don't let that prevent you from trying out his older, less serious stuff.
