Fail

Pete has posted some short reviews similiar to my "Quick Takes" explaining several series he's tried and given up on.

He calls Ikki Tousen "violent porn" and that's basically about right. There is a real story, and it's deeper than it appears at first, but myself I've tried watching it twice and given up both times. I have (or had) a lot of frame grabs from it in the top rotation, but I got those by scanning through the series, not by watching it. Because there's really no doubt at all about it: the girls are gorgeous.

He gave up on the first season of Ah! My Goddess! and explains how he expects things to go. And he's pretty much right about them: Mishima really is mainly comic relief, for instance. Mishima's most important contribution to the continuity is to help introduce Mara, who regrettably is also mostly comic relief.

And yeah, there was always something intensely creepy and strange about the wish Keiichi made, and the fact that it was granted. But then, Beldandy is also rather creepy and strange.

And he's given up on Yumeria. He compares it to Magikano and, well, it comes up short in nearly every way. The only real way that Yumeria is better is that it has a better ending. The Magikano ending was really very disappointing. Not botched; it makes perfect sense. It's just that there was another way it could have ended, which I would have liked a whole lot better. Regardless, Yumeria's ending is a bit confusing, but very satisfying.

However, in every other way it's pretty much dispensable. If you never watch it, you won't be missing anything particularly important. (Except Mizuki, the stunning redhead.)

He's further into Shrine of the Morning Mist than I am so far. And though I hoped it wouldn't be a comedy, he's right that it's turning out to be one. Pity, that; it could have been better.

Hiro, the guy, isn't a jerk and isn't a poltroon and isn't a lech, but unfortunately he also isn't much of a presence in the series so far. He's more of a MacGuffin, the target of all the machinations by whatever evil force is involved in this. Presumably he's going to become more of an active presence later, but right now he's just kind of standing there and watching things happen around him. They didn't make him a contemptible personality, but in exchange he doesn't really seem to have any personality at all. I do hope he becomes more heroic before it's all over. (Based on Sixten's spoilers, I think he will.)

Pete complained about his Netflix queue, and how little in there interested him. I see Magical Witch Punie-chan listed, and thus I know there's at least one delight awaiting him. And I'm not sure which of the two Negima series he's waiting on. My take: the second season is a delight; the first season sucks rocks.

Oh, well, there's always fansubs. I downloaded the 720P DVD rip of Kemeko a couple of days ago but haven't looked at it. Which also has a stunning redhead in it. Inside it, in fact.

1 There's a certain advantage to persistent trawling of Netflix  and picking just about every title. Midori Days was delightful, for instance. I even think it even compensates running across Ikki Tousen. My wife and daughter are away for a month, so I'm getting 3 times bigger allocation of our Netflix bandwidth. But in general, I'm kind of bummed. Nothing is left to watch. By the way, part of it is how quickly DVDs fall out of circulation at Netflix. I'm looking forward to Kurau and Airbats, both unavailable due to being too old.

I'm not a Netflix customer, but I'm surprised that discs quickly go out of circulation. They just keep the bare disc, no case, so I'd think that they would keep one or two discs from everything that they've ever carried on hand. They wouldn't go out often, but their storage cost would be very small, and it helps them compete with on-demand internet video.

Like how McDonalds used to advertise the alarming number of people served, Netflix could adverstise: "number of videos now available: $AlarminglyLargeNumber"

3 Kemeko: We don't see enough of the redhead out of it, she's disturbing in it, and my angst alarms started going off after a few episodes.

Boviate, they can't make copies, remember? When a disk gets ruined, that's it; it's gone. Each title they buy, they are making a capital investment. $25 for the disk, and they break even when they rent it 35 times (about). Each time it goes out there's some degree of damage, cumulative, and eventually the disk becomes unplayable at which point they have to toss it.

...I'd think that they would keep one or two discs from everything that they've ever carried on hand.

If they "keep it on hand" then it isn't bringing in rental money. And if you mean "as an archive, to be duplicated when needed" then that would be a violation of copyright. A big target like NetFlix would get their ass sued off by someone like ADV or Funimation.

And in terms of their spreadsheet, it's a lot better for them to run out of disks that people want to rent than to be carrying disks people don't want to rent. Their business dynamic tends to make them understock because that's more profitable.

5 I'll echo what Ubu said re: Kemeko.  Very much a mixed bag.  But by all means give it a try, and definitely watch the opening credits, which are great.

Yay!  Another convert to Midoriism!

7 I would probably skip MnH/MD anyway, but Brickmuppet helped, and also I blogged about Ayase some time ago, so there was a small obligation to watch it properly. RACS had the whole season for $20, I snatched it without even renting all of it.

Anyway, one point here I guess is, most reasonable watchers will consume Netflix library faster than it is refilled.

8 Actually, due to its history MnH is probably not the best example. But I fetched Saiunkoku Monogatari strictly from trawling of Netflix. I later found a mini-review for first episodes by Don with which I agreed 100%. It was on a page that I linked in the past, but I obviously ignored everything he wrote on the topic.

9 I've found NetFlix service reasonably good. . . the biggest annoyance is not the series they don't carry.  Its the series they carry, save for one or two disks.

*Those* annoy.

"the series they carry, save for one or two disks."

Ungh, yeah, I haven't moved on to Banner of the Stars II because the last disc is on a permanent "Very Long Wait" (so is the last disc of Crest of the stars, which took like 3 months to get)

11 I watched part of "08th MS Team" on fansubs because one disc was solidly missing on Netflix.

12 In my case, I watched *all* of "Big O" through alternative means, because if I couldn't get several of the disks. . .

( I can't quite call it "fansub", as its one of the handful of anime I watch dubbed. . . )
