Divergence Google

I noticed a lot of google hits this morning for people searching for "Divergence Eve". So I took a look, and my series review is the third hit, after Wikipedia and the ANN entries for the series.

I wonder how that happened? Probably all the Google cred I built up during the USS Clueless days...

UPDATE: There's supposed to be a way you can find out your Google page ranking, but I've never figured out what it is. I'm not sure I'd know what it meant even if I did find out.

1 I think the page rank is visible with a Google toolbar or perhaps the Google Chrome web browser.

But I hate the idea of installing toolbars, so I've never done it.

2 The Google Toolbar is one way to check, but there are also a few websites that'll show you your Google pagerank; here's one:

http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

It's just a scale from 0 to 10 of how popular/important Google considers your page to be.

3 I think that website isn't very accurate, considering that Chizumatic and The Pond both pull a "5".

4 And denbeste.nu is a 6. That seems rather curious. Considering how many google hits I get every day I'd have thought that denbeste.nu would have a higher score.

5 Why does that make you think it's inaccurate?

I have the Google Toolbar installed, and it shows the same values as that webpage does for the handful of addresses I've just thrown into it, including your two.

6 I'd say that pagerank itself is mysterious and doesn't always seem sensible, but prchecker.info seems to be consistent with Google's own toolbar.

7 Why does that make you think it's inaccurate?

While I am the owner of The Pond, and therefore think it's the most important blog in the Universe, even I understand that Chizumatic is a little bit more influential.

The only reason I can imagine having a page-rank anywhere near Steven's is that I've been running under the name "Wonderduck" for a lot longer than his blog has been around.

Well, the common meaning of "influential" may or may not have much to do with the mathematically precise meaning Google uses in its calculation, especially since that algorithm is constantly changing as they fine tune, and as they try to foil SEO spammers.

I feel a bit uncomfortable comparing my site ranking to anyone else's because it feels a bit like "mine is bigger than yours", and I left that kind of idiotic comparison behind a long time ago. I don't really care all that much what Google thinks of me; it isn't why I blog.
