DirectVobSub

DirectVobSub is one of the components in the Combined Community Codec Pack. And it has an odd bug:

Every time I start playing a new file, it spawns another icon in the tray. There's only one copy of it running, and if I run my mouse pointer over them then all the phantom icons will disappear.

1 It seems to be more of a problem with Windows than the applications, I have it sometimes when VLC doesn't exit properly.

2 That has also happened to me with various programs from time to time. When they don't exit properly (or you kill them with Ctrl+Alt+Del) they leave a ghost in the tray that doesn''t dissapear until you hover it with the mouse   I've seen it both in XP and Win7 (I never used Vista).

But it's weird that it's happening to you every time.  Maybe there was a problem during the installation of DirectVobSub, the whole codec pack, or the media player, or maybe your version has problems with Win7.

3 It is a problem with the program's code, it doesn't exit cleanly.  I've wrote several applications that work in the task tray, and that's a fairly common problem with sloppy code.  You can simulate it by killing any program that leaves an icon there through the task manager, the icon stays until you mouse over it.
When you code the software, you write a routine that creates the icon in the notification area, changes it when you want it to look differently,  and you also have to write the code that removes it properly when exiting.

4 This problem has existed since more than 4 years ago by personal experience. Maybe even more, I think I started using directvobsub on '04-'05 but I'm not very sure, tho I do know it has been since I used it for the 1st time.

5 I used to get that problem too.  There is an option somewhere in the configuration settings to prevent that item from being displayed at all, I think its under the ffdshow settings.  I don't use CCCP anymore since it didn't play nice with the media server I'm using, so I can't look it up for you, unfortunately.

6 Yeah, but I want that icon to be displayed, in part because I want to know if the program is running, and in part because you get to some of the settings through it.
