Clannad

The much-anticipated next-Kyoani-show-after-LuckyStar-and-Haruhi, Clannad, has finally run its first episode. Screen caps here and here and here.

Initial conclusion: if you liked Kanon 2006, you'll love Clannad. Me, it's not my kind of show.

UPDATE: The fall season is shaping up to be angst central. Bleah.

UPDATE: Sez this guy:

I watched Dragonaut: The Resonance first. I thought I was getting Starship Troopers. I coulda sworn that one preview that I read said that the show had “people fighting aliens with mecha”. What I got was…Divergence Eve. More than anything else, the one thing that stuck out the most (HAR HAR) from this show were the ridiculously enormous bakunyuu boobs on the mature ladies of this show. This of course made perfect sense when I saw that this show has the same character designer as Gravion and Witchblade.

If it's got a Divergence Eve story to go along with Divergence Eve breasts, it's going to be one to wait for. But there's no way to know that from just the first episode.

But it sounds like it's more like the boobs in Gravion, where most of the girls are great but three of them are gross. (Mizuki and Cookie, and Eiji's sister when she finally shows up.) From looking at the splash picture on the Japanese home page for the series, apparently the girls who are Misaki's age are not built like Misaki.

We should be so lucky as to get something as good as Divergence Eve this year...

UPDATE: Frame grabs from this season's worst case of outright pandering here and here. (Well, if there's any case in which it's justified in plot terms for a girl in a series to be ridiculously oversexed, it would be a girl who's a succubus, I guess.) It's a bad sign when a pander series gets compared unfavorably to Girls Bravo.

And since when do seifuku have Sailor Moon bows on the backs of the skirts, like bunny tails? (And how does a guy who fights polar bears with his bare hands manage to get himself tied up by a bunch of joshikousei? That's kinky, that is.)

I'm planning on watching Clannad (duh, I loved Kanon '06), but I won't really be serious about it until the widescreen versions of the episodes get released.

Just isn't as purty in 4:3.

2 Looks kind of meh, even if I already have the soundtrack.*

* That's a joke.

4 That link didn't work, despite pasting it. Try this one.  And yes, it's looking like it just might be good, though trailers can't tell you anything about the quality of the plot and storytelling.  Just that it "looks cool."  I'm a bit concerned over the ridiculous halloween witch get-up though.  I wonder if it looks as exotic to the Japanese as a miko's costume looks to us?

5 I think one of the cool things about anime is that we really don't know what it is we're going to get from a season. Sure, there's shows we know we'll watch... I'm pretty certain I'll be following Clannad and Da Capo II.

But the show that I'll be looking forward to all week... I don't know what that is yet. What's more, I don't think I'll know for several weeks into the new season.

Chances are it won't be one I expected.

6 The same people who made the Kanon game also made the Clannad game, so they'd be similar. They follow a seasonal theme: ONE was autumn, Air was summer, Kanon was winter, and Clannad is spring. Clannad also has a theme of family (hence the name), so it'll probably be different from the "sad girls in the snow" of Kanon. About angst: is it really angst if the chars are trying to alter their circumstances but fail?

Ghost Hound is by the writer and director of Serial Experiments Lain, so it should at least merit a look. I can guarantee no angst in Genshiken 2.

IIRC, the seifuku that the senshi in Sailor Moon had after they entered high school had bows in the back. I assume the joshikousei took advantage of his reluctance to hit girls and swarmed him.
