3 I saw that before, apparently the explanation is something like a "Cascading high impedance failure".  Basically the power lines shorted somewhere and turned into a giant Sideways Jacob's Ladder.  The plasma from the arc allowed it to move, while the charring of the lines stopped it from conducting further down the line.  Upstream equipment that should have shut it down failed.
